  • Bread bakes inside circular ovens at Akbar Zareh's bakery in the city of Yazd, Iran. (Akbar Zareh is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The son of a baker, Zareh began working full-time at age 10 and regrets that he didn't attend school and learn how to read and write. By working 10 hours a day, every day of the week, he has sent his four children to school so they don't have to toil as hard as he does. The product of his daily labor is something to savor?his fresh, hot loaves are as mouthwatering and tasty as any in the world. After baking in the tandoor clay ovens (at left), most of the rounds of fresh bread are dried and broken into bits.

The DB project is funded by the Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO) Humanoid Project and led by independent researcher Mitsuo Kawato.   • Thousands of wine barrels in the aging cellars of the ultra-contemporary Bodegas Campillo in Laguardia, Spain. They use stainless steel fermentation tanks but employs both modern and traditional methods in the winemaking process. Their aging barrels are both American and French oak. The bodegas' youngest wine is four years old. The winery maintains an area where buyers of quantities of the wine can store what they buy. Because of automation, there are only five fulltime employees running the extensive entire daily operation. Few year round workers are needed. La Rioja, Laguardia, Spain.

  • Engine and control room of the Scandinavian-built ice-breaker Akademik Sergey Vavilov, originally built for the Russian Academy of Science and still used occasionally by scientists, is now predominantly used for adventure touring in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. The ship is currently operated by a Russian crew, and staffed with employees of the adventure touring company Quark Expeditions, and carries around 100 passengers at a time. Rounding Cape Horn..
