  • (MODEL RELEASED IMAGE). The Breidjing Refugee Camp, Eastern Chad on the Sudanese border shelters 30,000 people who have fled their homes in Darfur, Sudan. Water is a constant preoccupation in the Breidjing Refugee Camp. Every day, lines of women and children carry jugs and pots of drinking and cooking water from distribution points to their tents. To get extra water to wash clothes, families dig pits in nearby wadis (seasonal river beds), creating shallow pools from which they scoop out water. In November, the camp wadi had water three feet below the surface. As the dry season advances, the sand pits get deeper and deeper. Hand-pollinated trees in barrels are covered with cheesecloth nets, which keeps stray bees from pollinating flowers with uncontrolled pollen. These draped trees are called "Zaiger's brides" by employees. Floyd Zaiger (Born 1926) is a biologist who is most noted for his work in fruit genetics. Zaiger Genetics, located in Modesto, California, USA, was founded in 1958. Zaiger has spent his life in pursuit of the perfect fruit, developing both cultivars of existing species and new hybrids such as the pluot and the aprium. Fruit trees in bloom -MODEL RELEASED. 1983.

Today Koi are bred in nearly every country and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish. They are often referred to as being "living jewels" or "swimming flowers". If kept properly, koi can live about 30-40 years. Some have been reportedly known to live up to 200 years. The Koi hobbyists have bred over 100 color varieties. Every Koi is unique, and the patterns that are seen on a specific Koi can never be exactly repeated. The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits. He cares for a small tea plantation that his father planted on their property near Kericho, Kenya when Kibet was a young boy and he is responsible for milking the cows that his family owns. He sells extra milk to a nearby school for a government feeding program and gives some to his mother who makes yogurt and sells it. His staple food is ugali, a maize meal porridge. He milks, feeds, waters and cares for the cows twice a day with the help of the wives of his brothers who also live on the property in their own houses.

  • During chilly mornings and evenings in northern Namibia's rainy season, the women of Okapembambu village draw steaming buckets of milk from their cows, despite the distraction of ankle-deep mud and manure. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Milk and its by-products are the Himba's most important source of nutrition. The women add a bit of soured milk to the fresh liquid to hasten the process of natural fermentation, and they shake calabash gourds for hours to make butter. They drink some of the soured milk, use some to make their cornmeal porridge, and mix butterfat with ochre to make their body cream.

He smoked 10 vials of crack and killed his girlfriend in his father's apartment bedroom. He mopped up the blood but left pieces of the mop on the floor, and bloody sheets in a bucket in the bathtub. The detectives took samples of the mop, bed sheets and blood on the floor. They bagged the hands of the victim for evidence and analysis at the morgue.   • In the Cambodian town of Siem Reap, the gateway to the ruins of Angkor Wat, an ingenious device is popular among the townspeople for catching crickets. A black light is hung above a plastic sheet that glows with an ultraviolet hue attractive to insects. The crickets are attracted to the light, land on the sheet, and slip down into a bucket of water, where they promptly drown. The Liemh family deep-fries the crickets and sells them in the local market for 6,000 riels, $2.50 US, per small basket.  Siem Reap, Cambodia.
