  • Much Australian food is similar to the foods found in Europe or the U.S. (shown here are local variants of the cereal known to Americans as Rice Krispies). But some are distinctly Australian, including, notoriously, the yeast-extract spreads. The most famous of these is Vegemite, bought by Kraft from its Australian creators. Other brands include the locally manufactured Mightymite and Promite (a sweeter version). Some Australians still hold out for Marmite, the British original.   • The Melanson family (Peter and Pauline and kids) have Thanksgiving dinner with his parents at their house in Iqaluit. Pauline is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Peter works as a senior informatics technician for the Nunavut government. Because Pauline works for the RCMP they get subsidized housing in the community in which she works: the island community of Iglulit for 2.5 years and now Iqaluit, the largest concentration of people in the territory of Nunavut. Many Filipinos in this predominantly Catholic population have similar statues, which they parade through the streets once a year.   • Water is a constant preoccupation in the Breidjing Refugee Camp. Every day, lines of women and children carry jugs and pots of drinking and cooking water from distribution points to their tents. To get extra water to wash clothes, families dig pits- in nearby wadis (seasonal river beds), creating shallow pools from which they scoop out water. In November, the camp wadi had water three feet below the surface. As the dry season advances, the sand pits get deeper and deeper. The computer monitor displays an image of one of Cyberspace's virtual (non-real) environments - a room - into which the player enters by wearing a headset & data glove. Two video images of the environment fit are projected into the eyes, whilst physical interaction is achieved through spatial sensors in the headset & optical fibers woven into the black rubber data glove, which send data to the computer on the player's position & movements in space. The SLC produces Z-zero particles by this collision process, which takes place at extremely high energies. The Z-zero is one of the mediators of the weak nuclear force, the force behind radioactive decay, and was discovered at CERN in 1983.   • Jill McTighe, a mother and school aide, sits on a couch at her home in Willesden, London, United Kingdom. (Jill McTighe is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  The caloric value of her day's worth of food on a "bingeing" day in the month of September was 12300 kcals. The calorie total is not a daily caloric average.  Jill is 31 years old; 5 feet, 5 inches tall;  and 230 pounds. Honest about her food addiction replacing a drug habit, Jill joked about being a chocoholic as she enthusiastically downed a piece of chocolate cake at the end of the photo session. Her weight has yo-yoed over the years and at the time of the picture she was near her heaviest; walking her children to school every day was the sole reason she didn't weigh more. She says this photo experience was a catalyst for beginning a healthier diet for herself and her family.  MODEL RELEASED.   • A betel nut vendor takes a drink of water between customers in Varanasi, India. Betel nut is a mildly narcotic seed eaten with lime paste and a green leaf. Over time it decays the teeth and dyes the mouth of the user red. Although its not considered a food, it is a plant item chewed by many all over Asia, and kept in the mouth like chewing tobacco. Sophisticated computers & sensors provide the user with a telepresence in the virtual world, through small video screens mounted in goggles on a headset, whilst a spherical joystick controls movement through the virtual landscape. One future Martian application of this system might be in gathering geological samples by remote control using a rover robot.
