  • Robot baby doll. Robot baby doll with part of its "skin" removed to show its inner workings. This toy, known as BIT (Baby IT), is a prototype of the My Real Baby interactive baby doll developed by IRobot Corporation and Hasbro Corporation. The BIT doll mimics the facial expression of a human baby by changing the contours on its lifelike rubber face. The BIT baby doll was developed by IS Robotics, Somerville, Massachusetts, USA.

  • Snarling at the rush-hour traffic, this new animatronic; that is, lifelike and electronic replica of an Allosaurus is returning from the paint shop to the Dinamation factory in Orange County, California. Dinamation International, a California-based company, makes a collection of robotic dinosaurs. The dinosaurs are sent out in traveling displays to museums around the world. The dinosaur's robotic metal skeleton is covered by rigid fiberglass plates, over which is laid a flexible skin of urethane foam. The creature's joints are operated by compressed air and the movements controlled by computer.

  • In the water, pike can accelerate at a rate of eight to twelve g's, as fast as a NASA rocket. To scientists, the speed is inexplicable. In an attempt to understand how the flap of a thin fish tail can push a fish faster than any propeller, John Kumph, then an MIT graduate student, built a robotic version of a chain-pickerel?a species of pike?with a spring-wound fiberglass exoskeleton and a skin made of silicone rubber. Now under further development by iRobot, an MIT-linked company just outside Boston in Somerville, MA, the robo-fish can't yet swim nearly as fast as a real pike, suggesting how much remains to be learned. Body temperatures below 27 °C (80 °F) are almost uniformly fatal, though body temperatures as low as 14 °C (57.5 °F) have been known to be survivable.   • In Tokyo, Japan, REONA, a life-sized silicon sex doll sells for $7,500 (U.S.). The doll was shown at the apartment of the creator, a designer of artificial prosthetics, in a small room that served as his office. It was slouched in a leather chair dressed in a silk pajama and pantyhose. He changed the clothes to show the full figure, including private parts, which are removable and washable (not inserted for the photo). The doll is moved around by wheelchair. Its cold clammy skin was not a problem, assured the designer. "The doll has great thermoconductive properties. You can put an electric blanket on it for a while and it will retain body heat for a long time."

  • Students in the laboratory of Professor Fumio Hara and Hiroshi Kobayashi at Science University of Tokyo work on their various robot projects, including the labs' first generation face robot. This three-dimensional human-like animated pneumatic face robot can recognize human facial expressions as well as produce realistic facial expressions in real time. The animated face robot, covered in latex "skin" is equipped with a CCD camera in the left eye and is able to collect facial image data that is used for on-line recognition of human facial expressions.

  • Student Yousuke Kato points to a female face robot created at the Science University of Tokyo, Japan, Fumio Hara Robotics Lab. The female face robot (secondgeneration) has shape-memory electric actuators that move beneath the robots' silicon skin to change the face into different facial expressions much as muscles do in the human face. The research robot undergoes a metamorphosis with each class of students assigned to work on it. The latest iteration allows the robot's face to mold into six different expressions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise. In some images, the computer monitor displays a graphical representation of the software creating the expression on the robot.

  • Professor Fumio Hara and Assistant Professor Hiroshi Kobayashi's female face robot (second-generation) at Science University of Tokyo, Japan, has shape-memory electric actuators that move beneath the robot's silicon skin to change the face into different facial expressions much as muscles do in the human face. The actuators are very slow to return to their original state and remedying this is one of the research projects facing the Hara and Kobayashi Lab. The robot head is lit from within by a pencil light strobe cloaked in a yellow gel. It was photographed in the neon bill-boarded area of Shinjuku, a section of Tokyo, on a rainy evening at rush hour.   • New Age meditation technology. A client at the Altered States Float Center inside a Float Chamber. The Float Chamber contains a 25 cm deep pool of water containing Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) and heated to skin temperature. The client may either relax in total silence, have sounds channeled into the chamber through underwater speakers or may view 'self-improvement' videotapes. It is claimed that within a few minutes inside the chamber, the client's left-brain relaxes into deep dream states, allowing meditation and relaxation. (Gers are circular tent-like dwellings with a collapsible wooden frame covered in animal skins, felt, and/or canvas. It serves as a home for shepherds and families alike. Traditionally, the structures fit the lifestyle of the largely nomadic Mongols. As the population became more stationary, the ger continued to be used as animal skins and wool felt were, and are, easier to procure while more western style building materials were expensive and scarce.)
