The son of a baker, Zareh began working full-time at age 10 and regrets that he didn't attend school and learn how to read and write. By working 10 hours a day, every day of the week, he has sent his four children to school so they don't have to toil as hard as he does. The product of his daily labor is something to savor?his fresh, hot loaves are as mouthwatering and tasty as any in the world. After baking in the tandoor clay ovens (at left), most of the rounds of fresh bread are dried and broken into bits.

  • Bob Sorensen, an assistant golf course superintendent of The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado conducts maintenance work on the golf course.  (Bob Sorensen is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) He played football at Mesa State College in Grand Junction and graduated with a degree in criminal justice. Just before he took a job in his chosen profession he decided that he didn't want a desk job and found one that requires his constant attendance of the great outdoors, at a golf course at the foot of the majestic Colorado National Monument. Some of his work is physical, but technology makes his irrigation chores easier. From one of many rock outcrops overlooking the lush fairways and greens in the dry, high desert valley, he can control a matrix of sprinklers with a single radio controller.  He earned a second degree in turf management, supervises a small crew of greenskeepers, and coaches high school football at Palisade High School.

  • Part of the bounty from a day's work by Icelandic cod fisherman Karol Karelsson and his colleagues, who work on a boat near the small port of Sandgerdi on the western side of Reykjanes peninsula, Iceland. (Karol Karelsson is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Although their craft is small, their large nets are mechanized. They monitor the casting then drink coffee and eat bread and fruit in the boat's galley until it's time to  haul in the bounty. They clean the fish in the belly of the ship, toss the guts, and then, after repeating this cycle many times for 8 hours, head for port. Karol takes a fish or two home each day, along with his pay.

  • Camels hop around on just three legs at the Birqash Camel Market outside Cairo, Egypt, where camel broker Saleh Abdul Fadlallah works. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Domesticated since 2000 BC, camels are used less as beasts of burden now, and more for their meat. Because they can run up to 40 miles per hour for short bursts, dealers hobble one leg when they are unloaded at the Birqash market. They are marked with painted symbols to make them easier for buyers and sellers to identify. Both brokers and camels have a reputation for being surly, and the brokers don't hesitate to flail the camels with their long sticks to maintain their dominance.

  • Floyd Zaiger, with two women workers on ladders, emasculate blossoms in the Zaiger's greenhouse. Flower petals and buds are removed to leave the pistol exposed, which is then hand-pollinated with brushes or cotton swabs. Blossoms are collected by hand from specific trees in the orchards and pollen is extracted from them by cutting the flower up with small scissors and sifting the parts. The pollen goes into a small plastic bottle that is numbered and stored in ice chests. Many trees are grown in barrels that are moved into the greenhouse to be worked on or to speed up or slow down pollination and development. Floyd Zaiger (Born 1926) is a biologist who is most noted for his work in fruit genetics. Zaiger Genetics, located in Modesto, California, USA, was founded in 1958. Zaiger has spent his life in pursuit of the perfect fruit, developing both cultivars of existing species and new hybrids such as the pluot and the aprium. -MODEL RELEASED. 1983.

(From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a day in December was 6000 kcals. He is 52; 5'7" and 220 pounds. Gutierrez works on the platform for seven days then is off at home for seven days.   While on the platform he runs on its helipad, practices karate, lifts weights, and jumps rope to keep fit. His food for the seven days comes from the platform cafeteria which, though plagued with cockroaches, turns out food choices that run from healthful to greasy-fried. Fresh squeezed orange juice is on the menu as well and Gutierrez drinks three liters of it a day himself. His diet changed about ten years ago when he decided that he'd rather be more fit than fat like many of his platform colleagues. PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela.

The heavy clay soils along the river near the market town of Sonargaon are well suited for making bricks. At the JRB brick factory, workers of all ages move raw bricks from long, stacked rows, where they first dry in the sun, to the smoky coal-fired kilns. After being fired, the bricks turn red. A foreman keeps tally, handing the workers colored plastic tokens corresponding to the number of bricks they carry past him. They cash in the chips at the end of each shift, taking home the equivalent of $2 to $4 (USD) a day.

He milks, feeds, waters and cares for the cows twice a day with the help of the wives of his brothers who also live on the property in their own houses.

She received a micro-loan from the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee (BRAC), which provides micro-loans to village women making mesh bags.
