  • (MODEL RELEASED IMAGE) Squatting before the fire with her children, Sudanese Refugee D'jimia Ishakh Souleymane stirs a pot of aiysh, the thick porridge that this refugee family eats three times a day. Despite losing almost everything in their flight from militia attacks, D'jimia keeps her improvised household as orderly as possible. To cover the ground inside, the family hauled in clean sand from the dry riverbed. D'jimia and the children sleep on two blankets, which she constantly airs out and washes. Even when they lived in their village in the Darfur region of Sudan though, aiysh was the mainstay of every meal, along with a thin soup.   • RADON CURE: Defunct gold and uranium mines south of Helena, Montana, attract ailing tourists, who bask in radioactive radon gas and drink radioactive water to improve their health. Each summer, hundreds of people, come to the radon health mines to relax and treat arthritis, lupus, asthma and other chronic cripplers. Visitor Ralph Clark at the Merry Widow Mine, which is a tunnel into the mountain, with a temperature that remains around 60 degrees in both winter and summer. The typical vacation at the Merry Widow Health Mine lasts anywhere from a week to two weeks and visitors are recommended to sit in the mine two or three times a day. Visitors also soak their feet in the freezing cold mineral waters or drink the mine water, which they claim is very productive to good health. The water at the Merry Widow Mine has been tested by the State Health Department and found to be pure for drinking purposes. The mineshaft touts radon levels as much as 175 times the federal safety standard for houses. The permitted total visit is determined by the radiation level of the particular mine. The average visitor is 72 years old. The mines appeal to "plain people," such as the Amish or the Mennonites, because of the "natural" healing aspects, the lack of commercialization, and the relatively low cost-per-hour for treatment sessions. MacCready's firm, AeroVironment, is at work on the Black Widow (transparent model prototype in MacCready's hand), a remotely controlled plane capable of flying 40 mph for up to 20 minutes.   • An elderly widow living out her last days near the Manikarnika Ghat, in Varansi, India..Bodies arrive day and night from far and near to be cremated at Jalasi Ghat, the cremation grounds at Manikarnika Ghat. One hundred or more times a day male family members carry a loved one's body through the narrow streets on a bamboo litter to the Ganges River shore?a place of pilgrimage for Hindus during life, and at death. Not every Hindu can be cremated here, because of transportation costs and logistical considerations.

Here, D'jimia Ishakh Souleymane, 40 (and a widowed mother of 5), shows her UN ration food card. Food distribution for the Breidjing Refugee Camp in eastern Chad, run by the U.N. World Food Programme, is very systematic. Following a precise schedule, workers distribute food, including bags of corn-soy mixture and sorghum to block leaders, who then parcel it out to families.
