It protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery..The Devils Postpile formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry. Another wonder is in store just downstream from the Postpile at Rainbow Falls, once called "a gem unique and worthy of its name." What makes their operation unique is that they use 3 acre round ponds to float their solar arrays on. The ponds act as a frictionless water bearing so that it requires very little energy to have the whole surface of the pond rotate to face the sun as it moves east to west. A series of small motors tilt the individual rows of the arrays to track the sun vertically as well. They use hot water from one type of array to run a huge still, which produces alcohol from molasses. So far there are 18 ponds. Borrego Springs, California (1990).

A DNA fingerprint is a unique genetic sequence, which identifies any individual, human or animal, from a tiny sample of tissue such as blood, hair, or sperm. Its many uses include the identification and conviction of criminals, and the proving of family relationships, such as the paternity of a child. Only monozygotic 'identical' twins share the same DNA. DNA consists of two sugar- phosphate backbones, arranged in a double helix, linked by nucleotide bases. There are 4 types of base; adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). Sequences of these bases make up genes, which encode an organism's genetic information. The bands (black) on the autoradiogram show the sequence of bases in a sample of DNA.   • Koi Fish in the backyard pond of Mr. Demello. Koi are a variety of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Today Koi are bred in nearly every country and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish. They are often referred to as being "living jewels" or "swimming flowers". If kept properly, koi can live about 30-40 years. Some have been reportedly known to live up to 200 years. The Koi hobbyists have bred over 100 color varieties. Every Koi is unique, and the patterns that are seen on a specific Koi can never be exactly repeated. The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits.
