Intended for surveillance, Urbie is a low-profile, remotely operated machine that crawls over obstacles on bulldozer-like tracks, beaming images of what it sees to its operators. The robot is intended to be exceptionally durable, capable of flipping over and surviving shocks that would destroy most other robots.   • In a simulated bedroom complete with stuffed animals, tossed bedclothes, and a sleeping dummy victim, Robin R. Murphy of the University of South Florida keeps tabs on her marsupial robot; or, rather, robots. Developed to help search-and-rescue teams, the robots will work as a team. The larger "mother" is designed to roll into a disaster site. When it can go no farther, several "daughter" robots will emerge, marsupial fashion, from a cavity in its chest. The daughter robots will crawl on highly mobile tracks to look for survivors, feeding the mother robot images of what they see. Although the project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Murphy's budget is hardly overwhelming.   • Hanging from a network of cables, Brachiator III quickly swings from "branch" to "branch" like the long-armed ape it was modeled on. (Brachiator refers to "brachiation," moving by swinging from one hold to another.) The robot, which was built in the laboratory of Toshio Fukuda at Nagoya University (Japan), has no sensors on its body. Instead, it tracks its own movements with video cameras located about four meters away. Brightly colored balls attached to the machine help the cameras discern its position. Brachiator's computer, which is adjacent to the camera, takes in the video images of the machine's progress and uses this data to send instructions to the machine's arms and legs.   • Designed for government agencies, military, police, SWAT units, and security forces, the TRAP T-2 is a remotely operated rifle. In dangerous situations, lawmen could fire the tethered robotic gun from a position safely out of harm's way. Developed by Graham Hawkes, a successful independent inventor, the gun is powered by a backpack worn by the shooter. At a shooting range near Hawkes's office in Port Richmond, California, the $47,000 rifle fires with deadly accuracy; untroubled by nerves or fatigues, it calmly and tirelessly tracks and hits objects no bigger than a quarter.   • Virtual reality. Jamaea Commodore wears a virtual reality headset and data glove appears immersed in a computer-generated world. Virtual reality headsets contain two screens in front of the eyes, both displaying a computer- generated environment such as a room or landscape. The screens show subtly different perspectives to create a 3-D effect. The headset responds to movements of the head, changing the view so that the user can look around. Like the HelpMate hospital delivery robot, OmniMate sits on robotic platforms called LabMates. Although earlier robot pallets had to move along cables buried in the floor, OmniMate can track its own location by measuring its movements precisely. Professor Hirochika Inoue thinks that developing robots with this structure of incredibly decreased weight and fewer parts will reduce the cost and the complexity of robots in the future for more widespread application. Together these sites, which cover 1000 acres, generate 275 megawatts of electricity, 90% of the world's total grid-connected solar energy production. This installation, located at Kramer Junction, has an array of 650,000 computer-controlled parabolic mirrors which track the sun across the sky, focusing it's light onto tubes containing a synthetic oil. The oil, which is thus super-heated to 391 degrees Centigrade, is used to boil water for steam turbine generators in one of five power plants. (1985).

  • Mountain View, California.Vials of chemicals known as P.A.H. (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) luminesce in ultraviolet light. These molecules, naturally occuring throughout the depths of space, are believed by these and and other researchers to be possible origins of life on earth. P.A.H.s have been found to become chemically modified when surrounded by ice and exposed to ultraviolet radiation -- a situation likely to occur in space.iOnce molecularly altered, the modified P.A.H.s closely resemble known organic molicules that are found in abundance on earth. Thus P.A.H.s may be found to be the first stage in a chain of molecules that led to life on earth. Researchers at NASA/Ames are simulating the conditions in space in order to study these alterations in the molecular structure of P.A.H.s. They also track P.A.H.s as they travel through interstellar space towards developing solar systems where they may become transformed into the seeds of life, all to hypothesize about the origins of life on earth..[1999]

  • In Suzuka City, Japan, ASIMO, (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility), a humanoid robot designed by Honda stands with the Suzuka Circuit Queen, and waves to the audience. Honda's walking robot, is child-sized and has more maneuverability than it's predecessor, the Honda P3. Unlike the P3, which couldn't be stopped once it began it's programmed routine, ASIMO can be controlled by either joystick or computer program. The GMD team plays in the medium-sized division, which uses a real soccer ball on a field about a third as big as a basketball court.   • At the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, MA, Joshua Bers models virtual reality gloves and tracking devices while calibrating them. Bers is working on his master's thesis under Richard Bolt. He is seen wearing the equipment detailed above for calibration purposes. Once programmed and calibrated, he can move virtual objects around in a virtual room. Bolt is working on multi-modal interaction using speech, gesture, and gaze. He is attempting to program computers to interact with their users by non-standard (keyboard, mouse) methods.

  • Fearsome sawblades spinning, Pretty Hate Machine menaces the competition at Robot Wars, a two-day festival of mechanical destruction at San Francisco's Fort Mason Center. Organized by Marc Thorpe, a former Industrial Light and Magic model builder, the cybernetic slugfest spawned a six-week BBC-TV series and many similar events. Pretty Hate Machine is a middleweight-class machine; two wheelchair motors power a Rube Goldberg assembly of rods, rubber belts and saw blades. A real crowd-pleaser, Pretty Hate Machine was one of the few walking robots in a competition dominated by wheeled or tracked machines. California.   • Ringed by six-foot sheets of bullet-proof glass and a sellout crowd, radio-controlled gladiators battle to the mechanical death. At Robot Wars, a two-day-long competition in San Francisco, CA the crowd roars to the near-constant shriek of metal, the crash of flying parts, and the thunderous beat of techno music. After a series of one-on-one matches, losers and winners alike duke it out in a final death-match called a Melee. In this Melee, the 13-foot Snake curls to use its drill-bit tail on its hapless victim, a tracked vehicle; meanwhile, the simple yet primitively powerful Frenzy hammers the rolling, wedge-shaped Tazbot.
