  • Factory workers carry bricks at the JRB brick factory near Sonargaon, outside Dhaka, Bangladesh. The heavy clay soils along the river near the market town of Sonargaon are well suited for making bricks. At the JRB brick factory, workers of all ages move raw bricks from long, stacked rows, where they first dry in the sun, to the smoky coal-fired kilns. After being fired, the bricks turn red. A foreman keeps tally, handing the workers colored plastic tokens corresponding to the number of bricks they carry past him. They cash in the chips at the end of each shift, taking home the equivalent of $2 to $4 (USD) a day.

  • Fossil fraud: Christian Ratsch, a fossil expert, holding a stone containing three fossilized trilobites. The three fossils are, themselves, genuine, but had been bonded together to raise their collective price. An amateur collector may not have noticed this fraud. The trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods, which lived between the Cambrian Era (570 million years before present) and the Permian Era (230 million years BP). The Park is located on 360 acres in three separate units. San José de Tumacácori and Los Santos Ángeles de Guevavi, established in 1691, are the two oldest missions in Arizona. This old bota (wineskin) workshop called Botería San Fermin is operated by three brothers-Pedro, Victor, and Juan José Echarrí-the third generation of this family business. Their grandfather started the business 115 years ago. They've been in the present building 30 years and started learning the workmanship involved when they were young children. Originally the botería was in their home. They had three floors for living and one for the workshop. Victor is pictured. Process: They turn the stitched hide inside out, beat it on a machine to soften it (they used to have to do this by hand by beating it on a rock) and then put tar on the inside goat fur.   • Hunched over a treadmill designed for arthropods, biologist Robert Full tests an Arizona centipede in his laboratory at UC Berkeley (California). Even though the centipede has forty legs, it runs much like an ordinary six-legged insect. Just as insects move on two alternating sets of three legs (two on one side, one on the other), the centipede gathers its legs into three alternating groups, with the tips of the feet in each group bunched together. In March, 1991, heads of the three Texas oil well fire fighting companies made their first trip to Kuwait to survey the damage of the burning oil fields set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops in February. Here in the Al Burgan field in mid afternoon, it was as dark as a moonless night due to the heavy thick smoke. The only light came from the more than 300 flaming oil wells and the truck headlights. It was raining soot and unburned oil. It was estimated that 5 or 6 million barrels of oil were being lost every day in this field alone. Huge oil lakes were forming.

  • In the Breidjing Refugee Camp in Eastern Chad, women wash clothes and themselves in water from the nearly dry riverbed, called a wadi. Water is a constant preoccupation in the Breidjing Refugee Camp, home to 30,000 refugees from Darfur, Sudan. Every day, lines of women and children carry jugs and pots of drinking and cooking water from distribution points to their tents. To get extra water to wash clothes, families dig pits in nearby wadis (seasonal river beds), creating shallow pools from which they scoop out water. In November, the camp wadi had water three feet below the surface. As the dry season advances, the sand pits get deeper and deeper. The Bodies arrive day and night from far and near to be cremated at Jalasi Ghat, the cremation grounds at Manikarnika Ghat. One hundred or more times a day male family members carry a loved one’s body through the narrow streets on a bamboo litter to the Ganges River shore—a place of pilgrimage for Hindus during life, and at death. Not every Hindu can be cremated here, because of transportation costs and logistical considerations. Sometimes a body is burned in one location and the ashes brought to Varanasi. There are other rivers in India, such as the Shipra which flows through the sacred city of Ujjain, that are considered sacred as well, but none holds the importance of the Ganges. Sometimes a small dummy representing the person will be burned at Jalasi.<br />
Only male family members are present and tend to the bodies at the cremation site as no show of emotion is allowed and also, they don’t want any of them jumping onto the fire, says one manager at the ghat. The body is carried to the water’s edge for a last dip, and then the main mourner prepares for his role in the ritual burning.<br />
The main mourner—usually the eldest son or closest male family member’s hair and facial hair is shorn, and his nails are cut. He wears a simple dhoti (traditional Indian male’s wraparound clothing). The chief mourner follows a prescribed ritual, which involves circling the body and showering it with ghee (clarified butter) and incense—like sandalwood—again often purchased from one of the local funereal accessories vendors. It takes about three hours for an average sized body to burn completely. If a family is poor and doesn’t have enough money to buy the right amount of wood to burn the body, then wood left over from other fires might be used. It takes about 350 kilos of wood to burn a body completely.<br />

In March, 1991, heads of the three Texas oil well fire fighting companies made their first trip to Kuwait to survey the damage of the burning oil fields set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops in February. Here in the Al Burgan field in mid afternoon, it was as dark as a moonless night due to the heavy thick smoke. The only light came from the more than 300 flaming oil wells and the truck headlights. It was raining soot and unburned oil. It was estimated that 5 or 6 million barrels of oil were being lost every day in this field.

  • Mie Ohshiro, 100 years old and slightly deaf, listens intently as 28-year-old nursing home aid Satoru Yamanoha repeats a question posted by a visitor about this Naga City Okinawa day care facility. "I enjoy it because I have lots of friends here," she says, "and my son and his wife also use this place." Mie lives with her second son and his family but comes to the center two or three times a week for a traditional Okinawan lunch, physical therapy, and companionship.
