  • Silicon Valley, California; Carver Mead and the Foveon Digital Camera Studio. Mead sits for a portrait with his new camera. Foveon Inc. built a high-end digital still camera that aimed to rival the quality of analog film. The new startup was backed by Carver Mead, the inventor of the gallium-arsenide transistor, the silicon compiler and the artificial retina. Model Released. 1998.

  • Solar energy electrical generating power plant in the Mojave Desert near Barstow, California. Solar One consists of a circular arrangement of 1, 818 mirrors, each measuring 23x23 feet (7x7 meters). These mirrors focus the sunlight onto a huge central receiver, which sits atop a 300-foot (91 meter) tower. The mirrors are computer controlled to track the path of the sun. Water is pumped through the receiver and heated to a temperature of 960 degrees Fahrenheit. The resultant steam runs a turbine, producing 10 megawatts of power for eight hours a day.   • Being carried along the edge of a reservoir outside Boston, MA by iRobot technician Ed Williams, Ariel the crab-robot is able to move with a slow, steady, sideways gait. A machine with a serious purpose, it is designed to scuttle from the shore through the surf to search for mines on the ocean floor. Ariel was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and built by iRobot, a company founded by MIT robot guru Rodney Brooks.   • The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC]: Seismic Monitor Nuclear test project in The Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1986 the USSR Academy of Sciences allowed the NRDC to install seismic monitoring instruments within a few hundred kilometers of their nuclear test site to verify that the USSR was not testing nuclear weapons underground during the nuclear test ban. By allowing this monitoring on their soil and by monitoring near the Nevada test site in the USA, mutual trust was built that facilitated the end of the Cold War.   • Proton decay experiment to determine the ultimate stability of matter..Proton decay. A technician [works with] a 20" (50cm) photomultiplier tube used in the search for proton decay. Hundreds of such tubes line a tank containing 9000 tons of water some 1000 meters underground in a zinc mine in Japan. Tokyo University's Kamiokande experiment was designed to look for decaying protons. If a proton decays, the charged particles it generates move through the water faster than light, and so generate blue 'Cerenkov' radiation. It is this that the photomultipliers detect. Computers then decide whether the event was a decay, or a collision with a solar neutrino. Japan. (1985)

Autorads are produced by labeling the DNA fragments in an electrophoresis gel with a radioactive marker chemical. The gel is then placed on a piece of X- ray film; the radiation from the marker leaves a dark patch, representing each fragment, on the film after development.   • Proton decay experiment to determine the ultimate stability of matter. A technician checking Perspex plates at the IMB Proton Decay Experiment site. The IMB Project is named after the sponsoring institutions, University of California at Irvine, University of Michigan and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The experiment consists of a 60-foot deep tank filled with 8,000 tons of purified water, dug into the Morton-Thiokol salt mine at Painesville, Ohio, some 2,000 feet underground. The proton decay event will be detected by an array of 2,048 photomultipliers that line the tank. Proton decay is essential in most Grand Unified Theories of the fundamental forces, but to date no firm evidence of the decay has been found.

  • Physics: Geneva, Switzerland. CERN: L-3 Experiment. A technician (K. Reismann) works inside the L3 detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. The L-3 experiment is part of CERN's Large Electron- Positron Collider (LEP), inaugurated on 13 November 1989. L3 is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP Collider. LEP collides electrons & positrons accelerated to an energy of 50 GeV in a circular tunnel 100m underground & 27km in circumference. L3 is a cylindrical assembly of many types of apparatus - hadron & electromagnetic calorimeters, drift chambers, & a time projection chamber - which fit together, like layers of an onion around the point where the particles collide. A machine with a serious purpose, it is designed to scuttle from the shore through the surf to search for mines on the ocean floor. Ariel was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and built by iRobot, a company founded by MIT robot guru Rodney Brooks. Inspired by research on crabs at Robert Full's lab at Berkeley, Ariel takes advantage of the animal's stability and improves on it. But despite its abilities, the technician in charge of the machine, Ed Williams, supervises Ariel's excursions with great anxiety. From the book Robo sapiens: Evolution of a New Species, page 100.

  • The Melanson family (Peter and Pauline and kids) have Thanksgiving dinner with his parents at their house in Iqaluit. Pauline is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Peter works as a senior informatics technician for the Nunavut government. Because Pauline works for the RCMP they get subsidized housing in the community in which she works: the island community of Iglulit for 2.5 years and now Iqaluit, the largest concentration of people in the territory of Nunavut. The image is part of a collection of images and documentation for Hungry Planet 2, a continuation of work done after publication of the book project Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, by Peter Menzel & Faith D'Aluisio.

  • Physics: Aligning Magnets in the 3 km tunnel of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Menlo Park, California.  Reverse Bend SLC Experiment, [1986].Technicians making final alignment checks in the tunnel of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC). The SLC was built from the 3km linear accelerator at Stanford, California. In the SLC, electrons and positrons are accelerated to energies of 50 giga electron volts (GeV) before being forced to collide. In this collision, a Z-nought particle may be produced. The Z-nought is the mediator of the electroweak nuclear force, the force behind radioactive decay. The first Z-nought was detected at SLC on 11 April 1989, six years after its discovery at the European LEP accelerator ring, near Geneva..
