  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

The blue/green and dark blue forms seen here are considered to be precious. Opal has a beautiful colored luster due to the varied dispersion of light from its structure. The charge induces an opposite charge on the ground, and a few leader electrons travel to the ground. When one makes contact, there is a huge backflow of energy up the path of the electron.   • Antipodean dinosaur hunting. Paleontologist Tom Rich holds the skull (in his right hand) and part of the tail of a fossil hypsolophodontid. This was a small dinosaur, about the size of a large chicken, living in the Cretaceous Period about 100 million years BP (before present). The specimen was found at Dinosaur Cove, southern Australia. Examination of the skull indicates that the creature had a large cerebral optic lobe, which suggests that it had some capacity for adapting to darkness. This becomes relevant when considering that it would have lived between 65 and 80 degrees south latitude, and would therefore have had to endure some length of permanent night in winter. Dinosaur Cove is the world's first mine developed specifically for paleontology ?normally the scientists rely on commercial mining to make the excavations. The site is of particular interest as the fossils found date from about 100 million years ago, when Australia was much closer to the South Pole than today. MODEL RELEASED [1989]

  • University of California Berkeley biologist Robert Full analyzes centipede motion by observing the insect's movement across a glass plate covered with "photoelastic" gelatin. On either side of the gel are thin polarizing filters that together block all light coming through the glass. When the centipede's feet contact the gel, they temporarily deform it, altering the way light goes through it and allowing some to pass through the filters. At Robot Wars, a two-day-long competition in San Francisco, CA the crowd roars to the near-constant shriek of metal, the crash of flying parts, and the thunderous beat of techno music. After a series of one-on-one matches, losers and winners alike duke it out in a final death-match called a Melee. In this Melee, the 13-foot Snake curls to use its drill-bit tail on its hapless victim, a tracked vehicle; meanwhile, the simple yet primitively powerful Frenzy hammers the rolling, wedge-shaped Tazbot.   • In the water, pike can accelerate at a rate of eight to twelve g's, as fast as a NASA rocket. To scientists, the speed is inexplicable. In an attempt to understand how the flap of a thin fish tail can push a fish faster than any propeller, John Kumph, then an MIT graduate student, built a robotic version of a chain-pickerel?a species of pike?with a spring-wound fiberglass exoskeleton and a skin made of silicone rubber. Now under further development by iRobot, an MIT-linked company just outside Boston in Somerville, MA, the robo-fish can't yet swim nearly as fast as a real pike, suggesting how much remains to be learned.   • Salt tailing pile in foreground of an above ground view of underground storage of radioactive wastes for the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP), 700 meters below ground. WIPP is a research project to determine the suitability of the local salt rocks as a storage site for highly- radioactive transuranic waste from atomic power stations. Such waste materials may have radioactive half-lives of thousands of years, and so must be isolated in a geologically stable environment.
