  • Studying the creation of life. A scientist adjusts equipment during a re-run of the Miller-Urey experiment into the origin of life. A flask containing a mixture of water, hydrogen, methane and ammonia has an electric field applied across it. A ultra-violet laser is used to illuminate the mixture and to stimulate an electrical discharge in the mixture. This experiment, devised first by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey in 1952, produces a mixture of 'pre-biotic' chemicals such as amino acids. It is suggested that the roots of life on Earth rest in prehistoric, global versions of this process. Photographed at the NASA Ames Research Center, California. MODEL RELEASED 1992.

  • Myron Kruger and his assistant, Katrin Hinrichsen, 'shooting' at each other with computer-generated sparks. Kruger is a pioneer of artificial reality, a method allowing people to interface directly with computers. In Kruger's method, called VideoPlace, the participants stand in front of a backlit screen. A video camera forms an image of their silhouette; the computer is programmed to respond to particular actions in a particular way. Here the computer sees the operators pointing, and interprets this as fire a spark in this direction. The computer-generated image appears in the background here on a large video screen. • An oil well fire specialist of Red Adair, Co. of Texas works to prepare a well for capping by sawing off the damaged well head in the Kuwait oil fields. The fire has already been extinguished but the well is spewing oil and gas into the air under high pressure. The trick is to cut through the metal casing cleanly without causing any sparks that could reignite the well and incinerate the workers. The company was one of those brought in to fight the Kuwait oil well fires after the end of the Gulf War (July, 1991) More than 700 wells were set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops creating the largest man-made environmental disaster in history.

  • Bill Wysock in his backyard, in Monrovia (near Hollywood), California. Fiery sparks crackle from a metal tube as he also lights a 40-watt light bulb in his hands. He is sitting on a metal disk linked by a cable to his Tesla coil: a transformer producing high-frequency currents that pass safely over the surface of his body. Low-frequency currents would pass through it, meeting resistance and causing injury. MODEL RELEASED (1992)
