  • Los Alamos National Lab, New Mexico. Research in the flow cytometry lab - sorting chromosomes for DNA Library. The counting of cells is called cytometry. Flow cytometry characterizes single cells as they pass at high speed through a laser beam. Speeds of up to 50,000 cells a second can be measured. The scattering of the laser beam provides a way to identify the cells. Many other characteristics, such as shape and surface texture can also be measured. The cells are then sorted as electrically charged droplets. This also purifies the samples. (1989).Human Genome Project.

The caloric value of her day's worth of food in March was 3700 kcals. She is 28 years of age; 5 feet, 6 inches tall; and 144 pounds. She's wearing her Bread Queen sash and crown, which she dons whenever she appears at festivals, trade shows, and educational events, representing the baker's guild of Germany's greater Cologne region. At the age of three, she started her career in her father's bakery, helping her parents with simple chores like sorting nuts. Her career plan is to return to this bakery, which has been in the family for four generations, in a few years. She will remodel the old premises slightly to allow customers the opportunity to watch the baking process, but plans to keep the old traditions of her forebears alive. MODEL RELEASED.

  • Physics: Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Large Detector construction: sorting through the tens of thousands of fittings. Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) experiment, Menlo Park, California. With a length of 3km, the Stanford Linear Accelerator is the largest of its kind in the world. The accelerator is used to produce streams of electrons and positrons, which collide at a combined energy of 100 GeV (Giga electron Volts). This massive energy is sufficient to produce Z-zero particles in the collision. The Z-zero is one of the mediators of the weak nuclear force, the force behind radioactive decay, and was first discovered at CERN, Geneva, in 1983. The first Z-zero at SLC was produced on 11 April 1989. [1988]

  • In a demonstration of mechanical dexterity, NASA's robot astronaut uses its hand to open a tether hook of the sort that will be used during the upcoming construction of the International Space Station. Designed to be as human-like as possible, Robonaut's hand has four fingers and an opposable thumb. Robonaut is the early prototype for the robotic astronaut being built at the Johnson Space Center in Texas. Full of machines being groomed for combat and surgically rescued after it, the pit is a sort of electronic fighter's dressing room and hospital emergency room. These are formed when a light green grub Cystococcus echiniformis burrows under the bark of the tree and secretes an irritating saliva which causes the tree to form a protective gall around the insect in a sort of oyster-and-pearl scenario, north of Alice Springs, Central Australia.   • A steaming sago "tamale" of sorts (actually, the dish is reputed to be without a    name) is made from sago grubs (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, the larvae of Capricorn beetles), and sago flour wrapped in a sago palm leaf and roasted over a fire, Sawa Village, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The resulting dish is like a cooked pastry, with a chewy, slightly sweet crust and the grubs taste like fishy bacon. (pages 72,73)

  • A traditional Thursday afternoon qat-chewing and tobacco-smoking session among friends in Sanaa, Yemen, can last five or six hours. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The men pick through the bag selecting leaves to chew until the masticated mass in their cheek is the size of a golf ball. Qat is harvested year-round.  Its leaves lose their potency within a day, so they must be picked, sorted, washed, and rushed to market daily.
