  • Deception Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula.  Kayaks launched near Pendulum Cove's thermal waters in Whaler's Bay, a protected harbor. Deception Island is the site of a circular flooded volcanic caldera. Conditions had to be perfect in order to kayak outside of the Bay, and they were. On the shore are rusting remains of Whaling operations (1911 to 1931) and the ruins of a WWII British base, Port Foster (1944-1967). Evacuated after a volcanic eruption, then closed permanently in 1969 after another eruption. Chinstrap penguins in the steam of the volcanics that are still warming the beach sand at Whaler's Bay.

Camels are well suited for desert climes: their long legs and huge, two-toed feet with leathery pads enable them to walk easily in sand, and their eyelids, nostrils, and thick coat protect them from heat and blowing sand. These characteristics, along with their ability to eat thorny vegetation and derive sufficient moisture from tough green herbage, allow camels to survive in very inhospitable terrain.

  • Bob Sorensen, an assistant golf course superintendent of The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado conducts maintenance work on the golf course.  (Bob Sorensen is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) He played football at Mesa State College in Grand Junction and graduated with a degree in criminal justice. Just before he took a job in his chosen profession he decided that he didn't want a desk job and found one that requires his constant attendance of the great outdoors, at a golf course at the foot of the majestic Colorado National Monument. Some of his work is physical, but technology makes his irrigation chores easier. From one of many rock outcrops overlooking the lush fairways and greens in the dry, high desert valley, he can control a matrix of sprinklers with a single radio controller.  He earned a second degree in turf management, supervises a small crew of greenskeepers, and coaches high school football at Palisade High School.

  • Trying to concentrate in a crowded, busy workspace, graduate student Harumi Ayai pats makeup onto the immobile features of a face robot in the Hara-Kobayashi Laboratory. This machine, the first face robot built in the lab, has a single camera in its left eye. Notwithstanding the relative simplicity of its design, the machine was able to smile when people approached it. Soumana Natomo spends much of his time overseeing his working wives. Occasionally, he makes a trip to their single-room storehouse to replenish the grain his wives are selling.
