Boots and Coots had a team of firefighters in Kuwait ready to go into Iraq several weeks before the war began. All of their equipment (including bulldozers and trucks) was flown in from Texas on large Russian cargo planes (AN-124s). Many of the wells are 10,000 feet deep and produce huge volumes of oil and gas under tremendous pressure, which makes capping them very difficult and dangerous. Rumaila is also spelled Rumeilah.

Biosphere 2 was a privately funded experiment, designed to investigate the way in which humans interact with a small self-sufficient ecological environment, and to look at possibilities for future planetary colonization. The $30 million Biosphere covers 2.5 acres near Tucson, Arizona, and was entirely self- contained. The eight ‘Biospherian’s’ shared their air- and water-tight world with 3,800 species of plant and animal life. The project had problems with oxygen levels and food supply, and has been criticized over its scientific validity.1990

  • Paul Jefferson, a blind amputee in army hospital in England was wounded by a land mine in Kuwait. Paul Jefferson, who had overseen the de-mining of the Falklands. He had also written a manual on defusing Russian land mines. But he stepped on one and lost a leg, his eyes, and parts of his hands. I visited him in a veterans' hospital for the blind in England a few months later and made a short video on his rehabilitation and recollections of the accident. In this photo he is being taught to type with a computer program that sounds out the letters as he types them.

L3 is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP Collider. The L-3 experiment is part of CERN's Large Electron- Positron Collider (LEP), inaugurated on 13 November 1989. LEP collides electrons & positrons accelerated to an energy of 50 GeV in a circular tunnel 100m underground & 27km in circumference. L3 is a cylindrical assembly of many types of apparatus - hadron & electromagnetic calorimeters, drift chambers, & a time projection chamber - which fit together like layers of an onion around the point where the particles collide.   • Paul Jefferson, a blind amputee in army hospital in England was wounded by a land mine in Kuwait. Paul Jefferson, who had overseen the de-mining of the Falklands. He had also written a manual on defusing Russian land mines. But he stepped on one and lost a leg, his eyes, and parts of his hands. Photographer Peter Menzel visited him in a veterans' hospital for the blind in England a few months later and made a short video on his rehabilitation and recollections of the accident. In this photo he is being taught to type with a computer program that sounds out the letters as he types them.
