  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

  • A worker emasculates blossoms in the Zaiger's greenhouse. Flower petals and buds are removed to leave the pistol exposed, which is then hand-pollinated with brushes or cotton swabs. Blossoms are collected by hand from specific trees in the orchards and pollen is extracted from them by cutting the flower up with small scissors and sifting the parts. The pollen goes into a small plastic bottle that is numbered and stored in ice chests. Many trees are grown in barrels that are moved into the greenhouse to be worked on or to speed up or slow down pollination and development..Floyd Zaiger (Born 1926) is a biologist who is most noted for his work in fruit genetics. Zaiger Genetics, located in Modesto, California, USA, was founded in 1958. Zaiger has spent his life in pursuit of the perfect fruit, developing both cultivars of existing species and new hybrids such as the pluot and the aprium. -MODEL RELEASED. 1983.

In the spring this can be dangerous because the ice is breaking up and sometimes huge pieces break off and move out to sea.   • t the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, computer scientist John M. Hollerbach puts a lab staff member on the SARCOS Treadport, a device that mimics the tug and pull of acceleration. Walking on a treadmill, the staffer is surrounded by a projected simulation of a Western mountainside. On a real hill, hikers must struggle with their own inertia to surmount the slope, a sensation no ordinary treadmill can provide. The Treadport uses force-feedback to push or pull at the user, uncannily evoking the sensation of climbing, a new dimension of realism for this type of simulation.   • The horse race at the All Saints Day celebration in the town of Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Guatemala, finds many lively participants. Dressed in special holiday clothing for the All Saints Day celebration, a mob of men on horseback race back and forth down the main road into town between throngs of onlookers, stopping at each end of the course to take a pull of hard liquor before galloping at a breakneck pace to the other end. This exciting diversion goes on for hours as new riders enter the festivities and other riders fall off or just drunkenly give up.   • Women harvest wheat in terraced strips through the hillsides near their home in the village of Shingkhey, Bhutan. Each strip is devoted to a different crop, and dependent on the season: wheat, rice, chilies, or potatoes. The wheat harvest, now in full swing, is assigned to the women. They take two long, dowel-like sticks, pinch a fistful of wheat heads between them, and then pull up, snapping off the heads. For long-term storage, they cut the whole stalk, bind it into sheaves, and store the result in the attic, from where it is threshed little by little, as the family needs it. The family of subsistence farmers lives in a 3-story rammed-earth house in the hillside village of Shingkhey, Bhutan. From Peter Menzel's Material World Project that showed 30 statistically average families in 30 countries with all their possessions.

  • When a terrifying earthquake leveled part of Turkey in the fall of 1999, rescuers had trouble pulling victims from the rubble because it was too risky to crawl through the unstable ruins. As a result, some people died before they could be rescued. Shigeo Hirose of the Tokyo Technical Institute thinks he may have the solution: Blue Dragon (Souryu in Japanese). A light, triple-jointed robot with a digital camera in its nose, Blue Dragon could crawl through an earthquake-damaged building in search of survivors. Wriggling over a pile of shattered concrete on a construction site at the institute's campus, the battery-operated robot fell over several times, but righted itself quickly and continued slithering through the pile of stone.   • Tao Xiuzeng, a worker at the Silk Factory #1 in the city of Suzhou, describes her favorite recipe for silkworms as she pulls the silkworm cocoons from boiling water, threads the fine  silk filament onto a reel, and then tosses away the rest of the pupae when the 1000 yards or more of silk is wound off each one. Occasionally she brings silk worm pupae home to eat, first drying them in the oven, then stir-frying them with ginger, onion, rice wine, and garlic, Suzhou, China. The machine can be rented as a destructive attraction for car and air shows. Like a huge transformer toy, Robosaurus folds itself into a tractor trailer that is pulled by a large truck.   • Chaurino Perez Andrate, 17, offers a plate-sized sample of roasted Theraphosa leblondi, the world's largest tarantula in his village of Sejal, Venezuela. Chaurino stuns the leblondi by whacking it with a stick, gathers its legs, and lowers it onto the fire. The spider makes a final hiss as its insides heat up and it shoots out a yard-long spurt of hot juice. After it is roasted for about seven minutes, its charred hairs are rubbed away and the legs pulled off. When we crack them open, there's white meat.(Man Eating Bugs page 175)

  • In a rice paddy near Ubud, Bali (Indonesia), a young boy catches dragonflies with a wand made from jackfruit palm frond stem tipped with sticky jackfruit sap. He pulls the dragonfly off the end of the wand before skewering it on a stick to take home. Past generation of Balinese kids routinely caught dragonflies this way, then dewinged, and stir-fried them with coconut oil: a crispy protein snack.
