  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

  • Deception Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula.  Kayaks launched near Pendulum Cove's thermal waters in Whaler's Bay, a protected harbor. Deception Island is the site of a circular flooded volcanic caldera. Conditions had to be perfect in order to kayak outside of the Bay, and they were. On the shore are rusting remains of Whaling operations (1911 to 1931) and the ruins of a WWII British base, Port Foster (1944-1967). Evacuated after a volcanic eruption, then closed permanently in 1969 after another eruption. Chinstrap penguins in the steam of the volcanics that are still warming the beach sand at Whaler's Bay.

  • Fans invited off a street in Tokyo's Harajuku area to meet Pino pose with the popular robot. Pino, short for Pinocchio (after the fabled wooden puppet that becomes a human boy), is a full-bodied, child-sized, humanoid robot. Even before it demonstrates the ability of a wide range of bipedal movements it already has a national following in Japan after the release of a music video called "Can You Keep a Secret" in which the robot stars alongside one of Japan's most popular recording artists, Hikaru Utada. It has elevated Tatsuya Matsui, the artist who created the robot design, to celebrity status and provoked murmurs of dissent by some in the robotics community who see the robot as a commercial entity rather than a serious research project. Interestingly, the robot project is part of a large ERATO grant from the Japan Science and Technology Corporation, a branch of the Science and Technology Agency of the Japanese government. Project creator Hiraoki Kitano  believes that the aesthetics of a robot are important in order for it to be accepted by humans into their living space. At the Kitano Symbiotic Systems, Tokyo, Japan.

  • Mopane worms dry in the sun after being cleaned and boiled in salted water. The harvest of mopane worms (dried, they have three times the amount of protein as beef) is a major economic event in Botswana. Whole families move into the countryside and set up camp in order to collect the worms. While mopane worms are eaten in Botswana, they are a coveted form of protein in South Africa as well and have been largely over-harvested there. (page 126)

Dating back to 1968, Camp Shane is the oldest weight-loss camp in the country and is a heavy investment for parents. There are about 500 male and female campers housed in small cabins on shaded hillsides overlooking athletic fields, a small lake, and the camp's most important building, the cafeteria. ?The food here is not bad. It's not what I would order in a restaurant,? says 15-year-old Mackenzie. ?You know, its been prepared low-fat, low-sodium, but when you eat it you're like, whoa, this isn't that bad. And it's really good for me? But before everyone goes, they pig out the week before. One summer I probably gained about five pounds the week before I went to camp.? MODEL RELEASED.

  • Mountain View, California.Vials of chemicals known as P.A.H. (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) luminesce in ultraviolet light. These molecules, naturally occuring throughout the depths of space, are believed by these and and other researchers to be possible origins of life on earth. P.A.H.s have been found to become chemically modified when surrounded by ice and exposed to ultraviolet radiation -- a situation likely to occur in space.iOnce molecularly altered, the modified P.A.H.s closely resemble known organic molicules that are found in abundance on earth. Thus P.A.H.s may be found to be the first stage in a chain of molecules that led to life on earth. Researchers at NASA/Ames are simulating the conditions in space in order to study these alterations in the molecular structure of P.A.H.s. They also track P.A.H.s as they travel through interstellar space towards developing solar systems where they may become transformed into the seeds of life, all to hypothesize about the origins of life on earth..[1999]

  • In this photo-illustration, graduate student Josh Davis (underwater, in a wet-suit) helps the RoboPike breach out of the water in order to show how well the robotic fish might be able to swim one day. Photographed at the Department of Ocean Engineering Testing Tank Facility at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The idea for the image of the RoboPike breaching came from Professor Triantafyllou, whose dream it is for a robotic fish to swim well enough to be able to jump out of the water.   • Fans invited off a street in Tokyo's Harajuku area to meet Pino pose with the popular robot. Pino, short for Pinocchio (after the fabled wooden puppet that becomes a human boy), is a full bodied, child-sized, humanoid robot. Even before it demonstrates the ability of a wide range of bipedal movements it already has a national following in Japan after the release of a music video called "Can You Keep a Secret" in which the robot stars alongside one of Japan's most popular recording artists, Hikaru Utada. It has elevated Tatsuya Matsui, the artist who created the robot design (seated at left), to celebrity status. Interestingly, the robot project is part of a large ERATO grant from the Japan Science and Technology Corporation, a branch of the Science and Technology Agency of the Japanese government. Project creator Hiraoki Kitano (standing with arms crossed) believes that the aesthetics of a robot are important in order for it to be accepted by humans into their living space.   • Walter Haut, near Hangar 84. In July 1947 Lt. Haut was the Public Information Officer at Roswell Army Air Field. Under orders from his commanding officer, Colonel William Blanchard, Haut wrote and distributed the now-famous July 8, 1947 article that appeared in the Roswell Daily Record. The press release was rescinded shortly thereafter. The Roswell incident started on 2 July 1947 when UFO sightings were reported during a thunderstorm. Next morning a rancher, Mac Brazel, discovered strange wreckage in a field. When the impact site was located, a UFO craft and alien bodies were allegedly found. On 8 July 1947, the Roswell Daily Record announced the capture of a flying saucer. The official statement was that a weather balloon had crashed. Many Roswell inhabitants, however, believe this a cover up, and that aliens arrived. Model Released (1997).

  • A customer orders tilapia from Roseline Amondi's market stall in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. (Roseline Amondi is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  Roseline buys fish wholesale then fries them up on the street in front of her makeshift home and sells the lot of them before nightfall. She is the recipient of a small micro-loan which has given her the ability to open a small cafe, but the biggest boost to her life has been the women who have become her loan partners. The micro-lending operates as a club. If one person defaults, then everyone is responsible. The group is tight-knit, and gets together to talk about work, but also to play sports and support each other emotionally.  MODEL RELEASED.
