The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits. They use stainless steel fermentation tanks but employs both modern and traditional methods in the winemaking process. Their aging barrels are both American and French oak. The bodegas' youngest wine is four years old. The winery maintains an area where buyers of quantities of the wine can store what they buy. Preparation involves the removal of the fossil from the rock matrix, in which it is embedded, using a fine-tipped drill. Fossils are normally removed from the field with a substantial portion of rock or plaster around them. This allows the removal to be performed slowly and carefully, avoiding damage to the sample, and any required preservation work to be made. This fossil was found near Dinosaur Cove in southern Australia, the first mining operation specifically for the purpose of fossil hunting.  [1989].

  • Shot-putting Urbie over a two-meter chain-link fence, Alan DiPietro, a staff researcher at iRobot of Somerville, Mass., shows how soldiers might use this remotely operated robot in urban warfare. Intended for surveillance, Urbie is a low-profile, remotely operated machine that crawls over obstacles on bulldozer-like tracks, beaming images of what it sees to its operators. The robot is intended to be exceptionally durable, capable of flipping over and surviving shocks that would destroy most other robots.   • Myron Kruger jumps in front of a VideoPlace screen. Kruger designed this system to allow people to interface directly with computers. The operator stands in front of this large, backlit screen. A video camera is used to form an image of the silhouette - the computer then interprets different poses or actions as different commands. The results are displayed on an equally- large video screen, the image of the operator being manipulated in response to the commands. Jacobson's dream is to be the host of a virtual reality talk show. In the meantime, this former Wired Magazine reporter is content to tout the virtues of Immersive Visualization?the newly coined industry name, she says, for virtual reality. The tangible element of her job at SGI is to manage and market SGI's RealityCenters?facilities designed to do quick representations in a fully interactive graphical interface.   • Pencil-sized robotic surgical instruments allow heart surgeons to perform operations through a centimeter-long hole in the patient's chest. Doctors insert robotic instruments through minute "ports" in the body. Instead of hovering over the operating table, surgeons sit at a console a few feet away, controlling the robo-scalpels with a pair of joysticklike grippers. Each tool has a patented EndoWrist mechanism that allows it to move with the dexterity and precision of the human hand. The whole ensemble was developed by the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA, a nonprofit R&D center created by Stanford University. Dinamation International, a California-based company, makes a collection of robotic dinosaurs. The dinosaurs are sent out in traveling displays to museums around the world. The dinosaur's robotic metal skeleton is covered by rigid fiberglass plates, over which is laid a flexible skin of urethane foam. Deception Island is the site of a circular flooded volcanic caldera. Conditions had to be perfect in order to kayak outside of the Bay, and they were. On the shore are rusting remains of Whaling operations (1911 to 1931) and the ruins of a WWII British base, Port Foster (1944-1967). Evacuated after a volcanic eruption, then closed permanently in 1969 after another eruption. Chinstrap penguins in the steam of the volcanics that are still warming the beach sand at Whaler's Bay.

  • Hunting for fossils: Mine owner Bob Foster displays fossil dinosaur remains found in an opal mine at "the Sheepyards" mine area Lightning Ridge, southern Australia. Fossil excavations usually follow existing mining operations. The seam of opal-bearing rock is about 100-120 million years old, laid down during the mid-Cretaceous Period, a time of rich diversification of dinosaur species. Australian fossils are particularly interesting, as at that time the continent was much closer to the South Pole than today. This means that many dinosaurs would have had to cope with long periods of permanent darkness during the winter months. MODEL RELEASED [1989].

  • Oswaldo Gutierrez (center), Chief of the PDVSA Oil Platform GP 19 in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, monitors operations with his colleagues on an oil rig. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a day in December was 6000 kcals. He is 52; 5'7" and 220 pounds. Gutierrez works on the platform for seven days then is off at home for seven days.   While on the platform he runs on its helipad, practices karate, lifts weights, and jumps rope to keep fit. His food for the seven days comes from the platform cafeteria which, though plagued with cockroaches, turns out food choices that run from healthful to greasy-fried. Fresh squeezed orange juice is on the menu as well and Gutierrez drinks three liters of it a day himself. His diet changed about ten years ago when he decided that he'd rather be more fit than fat like many of his platform colleagues. PDVSA is the state oil company of Venezuela.
