  • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

BGO (formula Bi4 Ge3 O12) is used to detect electrons and photons generated by electron- positron collisions in the LEP Collider ring. When an electron or photon enters the crystal, its energy is converted into light. The light is channeled by the crystal to photodiodes, producing an electronic signal. 11, 000 crystals, totaling 12 tons in weight, are used in the detector, measuring the energy and position of the incoming particles at very high resolution.   • Tao Xiuzeng, a worker at the Silk Factory #1 in the city of Suzhou, describes her favorite recipe for silkworms as she pulls the silkworm cocoons from boiling water, threads the fine  silk filament onto a reel, and then tosses away the rest of the pupae when the 1000 yards or more of silk is wound off each one. Occasionally she brings silk worm pupae home to eat, first drying them in the oven, then stir-frying them with ginger, onion, rice wine, and garlic, Suzhou, China. Although the kitchens in these images are wildly different in location and appearance, all of them form the center of a home, even if only temporarily. Kitchens are where families take care of themselves. Cooking is a fundamental task that women, throughout the ages, have undertaken. The harvest of mopane worms is a major economic event in Botswana where whole families move into the countryside and set up camp in order to collect the worms. What is currently being prepared on this mobile food cart is 'pav bhaji' Pav literally means 'bun-bread', which is what is seen on the big iron plate on the left side. 'Bhaji' is a mixture of a few different vegetables - onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, eggplant, carrots, peas, etc..   • Fish, chilies, ginger, onions, tomatoes and cabbages are among the foods available in a marketplace in Jakar, Bumthang Bhutan. Some of the produce is grown locally and some, like oranges, is trucked from India. A rocklike hard white cheese sold by the piece and a specialty of this area of Bhutan must be chewed for hours before it dissolves.(Supporting image from the project Hungry Planet: What the World Eats) Grocery stores, supermarkets, and hyper and megamarkets all have their roots in village market areas where farmers and vendors would converge once or twice a week to sell their produce and goods. In farming communities, just about everyone had something to trade or sell. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world.
