Plans for a proposed design are fed into a computer, which is capable of displaying them in sophisticated 3-D graphics. Thus the real building is presented by the computer as a virtual one. Visitors wearing special headsets fitted with video goggles and spatial sensors can move from room to room within the virtual space as if they were in the real world.   • Applications of virtual reality systems in medical education. Here, Scott Delp and Scott Fisher are using a system developed at NASA's Ames Research Centre in Menlo Park, California, to study the anatomy of the human leg. They both wear a headset equipped with 3-D video displays to view the computer-generated graphical images - one is shown between the two doctors. Physical exploration of the leg anatomy is afforded by using the data glove, a black rubber glove with woven optical fiber sensors, which relays data on their physical hand movements back to the computer.   • The Holy Land Experience is a Christian theme park in Orlando, Florida. The theme park recreates the architecture and themes of the ancient city of Jerusalem in 1st century Israel. The Holy Land Experience was founded and built by Marvin Rosenthal, a Jewish born Baptist minister but is now owned by the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Rosenthal is also the chief executive of a ministry devoted to 'reaching the Jewish people for the Messiah' called Zion's Hope. Beside the theme park architectural recreations, there are church services and live presentations of biblical stories, most notably a big stage production featuring the life of Jesus. There are several restaurants and gift shops in the theme park. The staff dresses in biblical costumes. Admission is $40 for adults and $25 for youths, aged 6-18.

Today Koi are bred in nearly every country and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish. They are often referred to as being "living jewels" or "swimming flowers". If kept properly, koi can live about 30-40 years. Some have been reportedly known to live up to 200 years. The Koi hobbyists have bred over 100 color varieties. Every Koi is unique, and the patterns that are seen on a specific Koi can never be exactly repeated. The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits.   • Burton Richter (b.1931), Director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), photographed during the construction of the Stanford Linear Collider in 1986. Richter won the 1976 Nobel Prize for Physics, following his discovery of the Psi- particle at the SLAC in 1974. The Prize was shared with Sam Ting of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The discovery of the Psi- particle also implied the existence of two new quarks, Charm and anti- Charm. Richter has been at SLAC since 1964, having also designed the PEP positron-electron storage ring at Stanford. Theodore Roszak, writer, professor at California State University, Hayward, California. Roszak spoke at the conference on a panel discussion on "The Case Against Computers: A Systematic Critique" with Jerry Mander of the Elmwood Institute and Richard Sclove. This portrait is in his office at Cal State, Hayward. Roszak has written a number of books, including The Making of the Counterculture, the book that named a generation. . Roszak said, "Computers are like genies that get out of control." ."The cult of information is theirs, not ours." ."Every tool ever invented is a mixed blessing." ."There never will be a machine that makes us wiser than our own naked minds.".((Roszak was most uncooperative, saying he was very busy and that it was not to his advantage to be in an article in Germany when his recent books are not translated into German. We did a few shots of him holding the TV monitor and then he said he couldn't do it anymore so my assistant wore his jacket for the rest of the shoot while he went off to another office to make phone calls. The device at right is a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. The rare genetic mutation of SCID, found in both mice and humans, destroys the immune system and the body is unable to fight infection. Dr Mosier managed to implant disease-fighting human white blood cells into SCID mice giving them a permanent human immune system. This breakthrough enables researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California, USA, to study human immune disorders such as SCID, AIDS, leukemia and allergies. MODEL RELEASED.[1995]

  • Franklin's lightning experiment. Model demonstrating the idea of the experiment conducted by Benjamin Franklin in 1750 on the nature of lightning. Franklin (1706-1790) was an American experimenter in static electricity. He wanted to show that lightning was a form of static electricity and could be drawn from the cloud by means of a tall metal spike. Delays to construction led him to try using a kite instead, and he indeed found that he could charge a capacitor by lightning drawn along a wet cord from the kite. Many later scientists died trying to duplicate the experiment. This model is in the Boston Museum of Science, USA. 1991.

  • Nano / Micro Technology: Eric Drexler. Portrait of US nanotechnologist and author Eric Drexler. He is seated in front of a computer simulation of a diamondoid molecular bearing model of a robot he designed. This nanotechnology robot is so tiny it is made up of a precise number of atoms (orange and grey spheres). Although still on the frontiers of science, a robot like this may one day assemble molecules one-by-one, eat up pollutants, function as computers the size of a virus, or patrol the human body in search of cancer tumors.   • Application of virtual reality computer systems in the experimental design of novel drugs (molecular modeling). Russ Taylor docking drug and protein with force feedback robot arm. This system allows chemists to not only see whether two molecules might fit together but allows them to feel how well they do. The force-feedback robot grip lets the chemist rotate a simulated drug and fit it into a protein molecule. The computer calculates electrostatic forces & other parameters concerned with the probability of a reaction occurring & feeds this information back to the robot grip, so the designer may feel how smoothly or otherwise the reaction is proceeding. Fictional Representation and Caption: Interactive gravestones became quite popular in the 21st century. Adding snippets of video of the diseased was quite easy to program since nearly every family had extensively documented their family time with small digital videocams. AI (artificial intelligence) computer programs made conversations with the dead quite easy. Minsky studied at Harvard University before embarking on a distinguished career in artificial intelligence and robotics. In 1951 he designed and built with another colleague the first neural network-learning machine, modeled on human brain cells. This produces a bright flash of light, and temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius.

  • Virtual reality. Jamaea Commodore wears a virtual reality headset and data glove appears immersed in a computer-generated world. Virtual reality headsets contain two screens in front of the eyes, both displaying a computer- generated environment such as a room or landscape. The screens show subtly different perspectives to create a 3-D effect. The headset responds to movements of the head, changing the view so that the user can look around. Sensors on the data glove track the hand, allowing the user to manipulate objects in the artificial world with a virtual hand that appears in front of them. Model Released (1990)

The SLC produces Z-zero particles by this collision process, which takes place at extremely high energies. Honest about her food addiction replacing a drug habit, Jill joked about being a chocoholic as she enthusiastically downed a piece of chocolate cake at the end of the photo session. Her weight has yo-yoed over the years and at the time of the picture she was near her heaviest; walking her children to school every day was the sole reason she didn't weigh more. It has been developed for the study of action recognition and learning, particularly in children. Kismet has several moods, which it displays as expressions on its face. It responds to visual stimuli like a baby. When there are no stimuli, it shows a sad expression. When paid attention to, as here, Kismet looks interested.
