  • Silicon Valley, California; Icarian corporation software; 5:18 PM: Doug Merritt and Rani Hublou, the husband and wife team that leads Icarian, Inc. and the Icarian workforce in the company's Sunnyvale, California office. Merritt says that Icarian is managed so as to be a fun place to work. This is exemplified by the company-wide Friday afternoon in-line-skate hockey competitions that are held in the parking lot. Usually they drink beer from the company keg in the company lunchroom after the game but since this was the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, everyone went home after the game at 6 PM. (1999).

In late 1991 the museum was chartered by Congress as the United States' only official Atomic museum. A family inspects Little Boy and Fat Man, the atomic bombs dropped on Japan.   • Communicating with computers.  Richard Bolt.  Bolt is working on multi-modal interaction using speech, gesture, and gaze.  He is attempting to program computers to interact with their users by non-standard (keyboard, mouse) methods.  Using off the shelf hardware (cyber gloves, head-mounted eye-tracking gear, and magnetic space sensing cubes that are sewn into clothing), he and his students are creating systems whereby a user would not have to be skilled to interact with a computer.  He wants, "normal interaction with the machine--like you would with a human.  This will open the information highway to the world that cannot use computers."  His view of the future includes large screens, flat wall, or holographic screens which "spread-out information in space, like the real world." MODEL RELEASED.(1994)

  • In a spanking new, richly-appointed research center above a busy shopping street in Tokyo's stylish Harajuku district, Hiroaki Kitano shows off his robot soccer team. In addition to Kitano's humanoid-robot work at Kitano Symbiotic Systems Project, a five-year, government-funded ERATO project, Kitano is the founder and chair of Robot World Cup Soccer (RoboCup), an annual soccer competition for robots. There are four classes of contestants: small, medium, simulated, and dog (using Sony's programmable robot dogs). Kitano's small-class RoboCup team consists of five autonomous robots, which kick a golf ball around a field about the size of a ping-pong table. An overhead video camera feeds information about the location of the players to remote computers, which use the data to control the robots' offensive and defensive moves. Japan.   • Application of virtual reality computer systems in the experimental design of novel drugs (molecular modeling). Russ Taylor docking drug and protein with force feedback robot arm. This system allows chemists to not only see whether two molecules might fit together but allows them to feel how well they do. The force-feedback robot grip lets the chemist rotate a simulated drug and fit it into a protein molecule. The computer calculates electrostatic forces & other parameters concerned with the probability of a reaction occurring & feeds this information back to the robot grip, so the designer may feel how smoothly or otherwise the reaction is proceeding.   • Walter Haut, near Hangar 84. In July 1947 Lt. Haut was the Public Information Officer at Roswell Army Air Field. Under orders from his commanding officer, Colonel William Blanchard, Haut wrote and distributed the now-famous July 8, 1947 article that appeared in the Roswell Daily Record. The press release was rescinded shortly thereafter. The Roswell incident started on 2 July 1947 when UFO sightings were reported during a thunderstorm. Next morning a rancher, Mac Brazel, discovered strange wreckage in a field. When the impact site was located, a UFO craft and alien bodies were allegedly found. On 8 July 1947, the Roswell Daily Record announced the capture of a flying saucer. The official statement was that a weather balloon had crashed. Many Roswell inhabitants, however, believe this a cover up, and that aliens arrived. Model Released (1997).

  • USA  The Long Haul Trucker.Conrad Tolby, an American long-distance truck driver, photographed with a typical day's worth of food on the cab hood of his semi tractor trailer at the Flying J truck stop in Effingham, Illinois. The caloric value of his meals this working weekday was 5,400 kcals. At the time of the photograph Tolby was 54 years of age; 6 feet, 2 inches tall; and weighed 260 pounds. His meals on the road haven't changed much over the years?truck stop and fast-food fare, heavy on the grease?despite warnings from his doctor. He has more reason than most to watch his diet, as he's suffered two heart attacks?both in the cab of his truck. The trucker travels with his best friend and constant companion, a five-year-old shar pei dog, named Imperial Fancy Pants, who gets his own McDonald's burger and splits the fries with Conrad. From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets. (Please note that the calorie total is not a daily caloric average. See his chapter, and the methodology, in the book for more information). MODEL RELEASED...Note: The authors used a typical recent day as a starting point for their interviews with 80 people in 30 countries. They specifically chose not to cover daily caloric averages, as they wanted to include some extreme examples of eating, like one woman's diet on a bingeing day or the small number of calories a herder in Kenya ate during extreme drought. The texts in the book provide the context for the photographs, detailing each person's diet, culture, and circumstance at the moment they were photographed: a snapshot in time. Full's Poly-PEDAL Lab at UC Berkeley has been working with roboticists for years, supplying them with information on small animal locomotion that is used to conStruct innovative robots. Recently, the Lab has been working with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), testing and evaluating artificial muscles. Dr. Kenneth Meijer (from Holland) compares and measures a Stanford Artificial Muscle with a natural one from the leg of the Death Head Cockroach. After cooling the cockroach and exposing leg extensor muscle number 179, an electrode is suctioned into the muscle to simulate the nerve-to-muscle connection. From the government website: One of Kuwait's most famous landmarks, the Kuwait Towers are situated on Arabian Gulf Street on a promontory to the east of the City centre in Dasman. The uppermost sphere of the largest tower (which is 187 meters high) has a revolving observation area and a restaurant with access by high speed lifts. Catheters are stuck down the badgers' throats, anesthetizing them, allowing researchers to take blood samples.  By taking sputum and blood samples that are then DNA fingerprinted, researchers are able to study the epidemiology of tuberculosis in badgers and how they spread it to cattle.   • (1992) At the Home Office of the Forensic Science Service in Aldermaston, England, John Bark and Linda Nelson discuss the results of a DNA profile of blood and semen samples taken from a pair of pants. The blood will be removed, and then analyzed using DNA fingerprinting techniques. This will enable the scientist to determine whether the blood belonged to the victim or the assailant.   • Roy Want holds his invention - the Xerox parctab. This hand-held, 200-gram prototype allows the user to beam information to a personal computer by writing a series of shorthand-like symbols, each of which represents a letter of the alphabet, on a pressure-sensitive screen. Want is a researcher at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Centre) in California's Silicon Valley. One of the most innovative computer companies in the USA, PARC is the birthplace of the mouse, the computer workstation and the "graphical user interface", the now-universal system of windows and icons that makes it possible for a novice to use a computer. Theodore Roszak, writer, professor at California State University, Hayward, California. Roszak spoke at the conference on a panel discussion on "The Case Against Computers: A Systematic Critique" with Jerry Mander of the Elmwood Institute and Richard Sclove. This portrait is in his office at Cal State, Hayward. Roszak has written a number of books, including The Making of the Counterculture, the book that named a generation. . Roszak said, "Computers are like genies that get out of control." ."The cult of information is theirs, not ours." ."Every tool ever invented is a mixed blessing." ."There never will be a machine that makes us wiser than our own naked minds.".((Roszak was most uncooperative, saying he was very busy and that it was not to his advantage to be in an article in Germany when his recent books are not translated into German. We did a few shots of him holding the TV monitor and then he said he couldn't do it anymore so my assistant wore his jacket for the rest of the shoot while he went off to another office to make phone calls.   • Professor Ron Fearing and his students at the University of California at Berkeley are using Dickinson's information to build a micromechanical fly. In the photo a 30% larger than final size scale mockup of the Micromechanical Flying Insect (MFI) is compared with its inspiration, the blow fly Calliphora erythrocephala. Researchers expect the stainless steel MFI to be flying in the lab by 2003. The main problem to be overcome in such a small device is an adequate power supply.

  • Sweet Lips the robot guide takes visitors through the Hall of North American Wildlife, near the Dinosaur Hall in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA. Carnegie Mellon University robotics professor Illah R. Nourbakhsh's creation draws children like a pied piper by speaking and playing informational videos on its screen. It navigates autonomously, using a locator system that detects colored squares mounted high on the wall. A color camera and scores of sonar, infrared, and touch sensors prevent Sweet Lips from crashing into museum displays or museum visitors.   • In a spanking new, richly-appointed research center above a busy shopping street in Tokyo's stylish Harajuku district, Hiroaki Kitano shows off his robot soccer team. In addition to Kitano's humanoid-robot work at Kitano Symbiotic Systems Project, a five-year, government-funded ERATO project, Kitano is the founder and chair of Robot World Cup Soccer (RoboCup), an annual soccer competition for robots. There are four classes of contestants: small, medium, simulated, and dog (using Sony's programmable robot dogs). Kitano's small-class RoboCup team consists of five autonomous robots, which kick a golf ball around a field about the size of a ping-pong table. An overhead video camera feeds information about the location of the players to remote computers, which use the data to control the robots' offensive and defensive moves. Japan.   • DB gazes intently at the camera by means of two pairs of lenses in each "eye." In a configuration increasingly common in humanoid robots, one lens in each pair sharply focuses on the center of the visual field while the other gives a broader perspective. These two points of view, surprisingly, mimic the human eye, which seamlessly blends together information from the fovea centralis, a small area of precise focus in the center of the retina, and the parafovea, a larger, but much less acute area surrounding the fovea. Similarly, DB has a vestibular system in its ears, vestibular systems being the inner-ear mechanisms that people use to balance themselves.  The DB project is funded by the Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO) Humanoid Project and led by independent researcher Mitsuo Kawato.   • Photographed at a baptismal font in the chapel of Schloss Burlinghoven, a nineteenth-century castle on the campus of the German National Center for Information Technology, the walking robot Sir Arthur stands with its creator, research scientist Frank Kirchner. Sir Arthur began as a relatively simple robot with sonarlike "vision" that prevented it from trapping itself in corners and snagging itself on obstacles. It was successful enough that Kirchner obtained funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to assemble a team of researchers from diverse disciplines: computer science, math, physics, and electronic and mechanical engineering, to build an enhanced, solar-powered version that can cross rough outdoor terrain.   • Madru, who is nicknamed Dru is a Brahmin priest who spends most of his time hanging out at the Varanasi burning ghats explaining the ritual aspects of the cremation site to tourists and journalists alike. Sometimes he is given cash presents in exchange for the information. When he or another Brahmin priest assists at a cremation, he works as a guide as well for the chief mourner, who must follow a prescribed ritual to ensure the proper send off for the loved one. Brahmins are given gifts by the mourning family throughout the ritual process, which begins at home when a Hindu dies and continues for many months and then yearly.
