The experiment consists of 150 tons of iron tube arranged in a cubic layout 6000 feet (1828 meters) below ground. Each tube is converted to act like a large Geiger counter, and is designed to detect the products from the decay of a proton. The half- life of the proton is estimated at 10 to the power 34 years, so the experiment has to contain as many protons as possible for the probability of an event occurring to be realistic. India. The Kericho district in the Great Rift Valley has rich volcanic soil, cool air, and a moist tropical climate that's perfect for growing tea. With its popular tea brand Lipton, Unilever has helped make Kenya the number one exporter of black tea in the world. Since the evergreen tea bushes are picked every 14 to 17 days year-round, there is constant work for pickers. They're paid by the kilo of tea leaves and a field foreman reported that they can earn between $3 and $9 (USD) per day. To compete with Unilever and James Finlay, another huge corporate tea producer in Kenya, the Kenya Tea Development Agency represents half a million small-scale tea growers throughout Kenya.

The factory is located on Elephant Road, downtown Dhaka, Bangladesh. While nearly half of Bangladesh's population is employed in agriculture, in recent years the economic engine of Bangladesh has been its garment industry, and the country is now the world's fourth largest clothing exporter, ahead of India and the United States. Dependent on exports and fearing international sanctions, Bangladesh's garment industry has implemented rules outlawing child labor and setting standards for humane working conditions.

  • At the Science Museum in Dallas, Texas, school children watch the animated robot dinosaurs Apatosauruses (half size, made by Dinamation International) swing their heads close to them. Dinamation International, a California-based company, makes a collection of robotic dinosaurs. The dinosaurs are sent out in traveling displays to museums around the world. The dinosaur's robotic metal skeleton is covered by rigid fiberglass plates, over which is laid a flexible skin of urethane foam. The plates and skin are sculpted and painted to make the dinosaurs appear as realistic as possible. The creature's joints are operated by compressed air and the movements controlled by computer.

  • The arrival of an Oxfam water truck to the Breidjing Refugee Camp is an instant call for everyone in the camp to show up with a container. The trucks fill yellow waterbed-like bladders, which rest on low platforms. The water flows through buried pipes to watering centers, where half a dozen people can fill up at once without wasting any precious liquid. WIPP is a research project to determine the suitability of the local salt rocks as a storage site for highly- radioactive transuranic waste from nuclear power stations.   • Virtual reality: Rich Holloway wears prototype headset which employs half-silvered mirrors to enable the user to view a projected image of a virtual environment (and thus exist in virtual reality) and also see in front of his nose. A virtual environment is one created by a computer. A person entering such an environment does so with the aid of such a headset, which displays virtual imagery. Tactile interaction with the environment may be made using a data glove, a Spandex garment wired with sensors, which relays movement of the hand & fingers to the virtual environment. The goal is to minimize inbreeding to insure a pure test breed.  Human probes are being used to identify polymorphism in monkeys, and the monkeys' blood samples are DNA fingerprinted.   • João Agustinho Cardoso, fishes in a shallow lake near the Solimoes River in Manacapuru, Brazil. (Featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food for a typical day in the month of November was 5200 kcals. He is 69 years of age; 5 feet 2.5 inches tall and 140 pounds.  João's new house has no electricity and the toilet is simply the end of the big balsa wood logs the house is floating on. There is, however, running water, and plenty of it, in the half-mile-wide branch of the river they live on. Unfortunately the water is not potable, but it is teeming with fish, including piranha, which can make swimming during the early morning or evening worrisome. The curimata in the photo is just one of dozens of species that makes its way onto João's table. Absent from his daily diet are any alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, eschewed by his Seventh-day Adventist religion.  MODEL RELEASED.

After a half-hour foraging, the grasshoppers are brought back to one of the mothers to cook and then the children eat them with porridge.
