  • Used tires entering a prototype burning-burning power station in Westley, California. The tires are used as fuel to run an electricity generator. It is estimated that one tire can serve the energy needs of the average northern California household for a day. A tire mountain containing around 40 million tires dominates the landscape (background); the plant is expected to burn some 4 million tires annually. Several environmental protection systems reduce emissions from the plant; a smog-control system neutralizes nitrous oxides, a scrubber system removes sulphur & a giant vacuum cleaner removes fly ash. Both the sulphur & the zinc- containing fly ash are recycled. (1988).

  • Physics: Lawrence Livermore National Lab in Livermore, California. Nova Laser. The Nova laser is the worlds most powerful, and is being used to initiate nuclear fusion reactions. Nuclear fusion is the joining of the nuclei of deuterium and tritium (heavy isotopes of hydrogen). The reaction produces vast amounts of energy, but requires an initial temperature of 100 million Celsius. To achieve this, a pinhead-sized pellet of fuel is placed in the chamber. The Nova laser is focused onto the pellet before a full- power burst is fired. This lasts only 50 picoseconds (trillionths of a second), but gives sufficient energy for fusion to occur. [1989]

Aerogel is a new material, which has very high thermal insulation properties and extremely low mass. It is made by adding alcohol to a conventional silica gel to remove water. The gel is then placed in a pressure chamber, and the alcohol removed under super fluid conditions. This prevents the gel from collapsing. The resulting block of silica fibers contains about 90% air, so is very lightweight. Aerogel is being studied as an insulating material and as a holding medium for nuclear fusion fuel. The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a typical day in December was 2500 kcals. He is 51 years of age; 5 feet, 4 inches tall; and 110 pounds. Behind him is a pile of last year's rice straw, used for fuel to boil water in the family's small kitchen. Rainwater from the tile roof of the main house fills a cement cistern, providing water for drinking and cooking. Theo enjoys the relative tranquility of village life, compared to his wife's busy routine of selling fresh produce on the sidewalks of Hanoi. Floods ruined his rice crop a few months ago, so after last year's store of rice is eaten, the family will rely on his wife's income to buy this staple grain until he harvests the next crop.   • Filling up a specially adapted Mercedes, the gas-bot at the Institut Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung (IPA), a government-industry research center in Stuttgart, Germany, is intended for a time in the future when automobiles run on hydrogen. Hydrogen is an environmentally sound fuel?its main effluent is water. But it is also so explosive that robots may end up topping off people's tanks. The caloric value of his day's worth of food in March was 3,800 kcals. He is 50 years of age; 6 feet, 1.5 inches tall; and 179 pounds. Sam works the lobster boat by himself, saving on labor, but in the summertime his son Scout comes along. ?He's a blast,? says Sam. ?I take him and some of his friends out; they're all just leaning over the rail in their life preservers looking to see what's in the trap when it comes up. They're pretty good at saying, 'He's got a keeper.'? Sam's state license restricts his traps to the bay, where he averages only one lobster for every two traps. After paying for fuel and bait, there's not much profit. He supplements his income with fish auction commissions, and his family's diet with venison culled from the island's deer population.
