  • "Costaleros" carrying an ornate float through the streets of Salamanca during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the rain. Street processions are organized in most Spanish towns each evening, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. People carry statues of saints on floats or wooden platforms, and an atmosphere of mourning can seem quite oppressive to onlookers.

  • NASA astronaut Leland Melvin on the flight deck of the Space Shuttle Atlantis with his typical day’s worth of food. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of his day's worth of food in the month of February was 2700 kcals. He is 45 years of age; 6 feet tall; and 205 pounds. The early days of space travel were dominated by Tang, Space Food Sticks, and a variety of pastes squeezed from aluminum tubes—all designed to prevent the levitation of liquids and crumbs, which can be hazardous to the equipment. Over the years, space menus have become more palatable, and now astronauts can even enjoy fresh fruits for the first few days of a mission. The challenges of weightlessness extend to photography. Even with three fellow astronauts helping to wrangle Leland’s floating food as shuttle commander Charles Hobaugh took the photo, all of the items in Leland’s daily fare aren’t clearly visible. • Koi Fish in the backyard pond of Mr. Cheu. Koi are a variety of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Today Koi are bred in nearly every country and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish. They are often referred to as being "living jewels" or "swimming flowers". If kept properly, koi can live about 30-40 years. Some have been reportedly known to live up to 200 years. The Koi hobbyists have bred over 100 color varieties. Every Koi is unique, and the patterns that are seen on a specific Koi can never be exactly repeated. The judging of Koi at exhibitions has become a refined art, which requires many years of understanding the relationship between color, pattern, size and shape, presentation, and a number of other key traits. Prize Koi can cost several thousand dollars each. USA. MODEL RELEASED.

What makes their operation unique is that they use 3 acre round ponds to float their solar arrays on. The ponds act as a frictionless water bearing so that it requires very little energy to have the whole surface of the pond rotate to face the sun as it moves east to west. A series of small motors tilt the individual rows of the arrays to track the sun vertically as well. They use hot water from one type of array to run a huge still, which produces alcohol from molasses. So far there are 18 ponds. Borrego Springs, California (1990).
