  • A family owned wineskin workshop in Pamplona, Spain. This old bota (wineskin) workshop called Botería San Fermin is operated by three brothers-Pedro, Victor, and Juan José Echarrí-the third generation of this family business. Their grandfather started the business 115 years ago. They've been in the present building 30 years and started learning the workmanship involved when they were young children. Originally the botería was in their home. They had three floors for living and one for the workshop. Victor is pictured. Process: They turn the stitched hide inside out, beat it on a machine to soften it (they used to have to do this by hand by beating it on a rock) and then put tar on the inside goat fur. Many of the components scattered over his desk are simple, cheap, and (by contemporary standards) primitive; many are ripped from junked tape decks, cameras, and VCRs. Nito will be Tilden's most ambitious creation yet. (The name stands for "Neural Implementation of a Torso Organism.") Valur occasionally acts in performances that center on his partner's artworks; most recently in a show called Common Nonsense that they and a troupe of actors performed in Reykjavik, Stockholm, and London.   • In a simulated bedroom complete with stuffed animals, tossed bedclothes, and a sleeping dummy victim, Robin R. Murphy of the University of South Florida keeps tabs on her marsupial robot; or, rather, robots. Developed to help search-and-rescue teams, the robots will work as a team. The larger "mother" is designed to roll into a disaster site. When it can go no farther, several "daughter" robots will emerge, marsupial fashion, from a cavity in its chest. The daughter robots will crawl on highly mobile tracks to look for survivors, feeding the mother robot images of what they see. Although the project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Murphy's budget is hardly overwhelming.   • Death is part of the fabric of life for Hindus and like much of Indian society, takes place in open view. In the early morning men and women wash clothes in the river, slapping dhoti, saris, and other pieces of clothing against rocks and cement slabs as others tend to the bodies burning on the shore at Harishchandra Ghat. A man uses a long bamboo pole that once was part of the litter fashioned to carry a body to the cremation grounds at Harishchandra Ghat to flip the unburned legs and arms back into the fire. He uses the pole to smash the skulls open as well so that it burns more easily. The Harishchandra Ghat (also known as the Harish Chandra Ghat) is the smaller and more ancient of the two primary cremation grounds in Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges River.
