In farming communities, just about everyone had something to trade or sell. As transportation became more efficient (especially refrigerated transport), and farms became huge, big corporations moved into the food business to take advantage of scale, especially in the United States. Now the convenience of one-stop shopping has made this business even bigger. Even the smaller supermarkets are being bought up or run out of business by the larger concerns. Some small town markets still exist today throughout much of Europe, although to a lesser degree there as well. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world, and, for better or worse, will remain so until they are numerous and big enough to attract the conglomerates' attention. Coming full circle, farmers markets have come back into vogue in some places in the USA where they had largely disappeared.

  • Silicon Valley, California; Icarian corporation software; 5:18 PM: Doug Merritt and Rani Hublou, the husband and wife team that leads Icarian, Inc. and the Icarian workforce in the company's Sunnyvale, California office. Merritt says that Icarian is managed so as to be a fun place to work. This is exemplified by the company-wide Friday afternoon in-line-skate hockey competitions that are held in the parking lot. Usually they drink beer from the company keg in the company lunchroom after the game but since this was the beginning of the Fourth of July weekend, everyone went home after the game at 6 PM. (1999).

  • Because it is Ramadan, the month when Muslims fast during the daylight hours, everyone is working at a slower pace than usual. Indeed, some men use the occasion to lounge about for hours, dazzling passersby with their most elegant outfits. Even during the rest of the year, though, men can often be seen resting quietly in shady spots throughout Malian villages while their wives pound grain, wash clothes, care for children, cook, and gather firewood. One perk that the Melansons can take advantage of that isn't available to everyone in Nunavut is the sealift: bulk buying of staple foods to bring down the high price of food to this remote area. It comes in via ship from Canada's southern provinces.   • (MODEL RELEASED IMAGE). After a five-hour sled ride from Cap Hope, the Madsens arrive at their destination, a frozen lake below a glacier. They spent most of the night ice fishing (at the end of May the sun does not set this far above the Arctic Circle)  for artic char. The next afternoon, after another 6 hours of fishing everyone gets to enjoy Emil's dinner: steamed arctic char with curry and rice in the canvas tent.   • A customer orders tilapia from Roseline Amondi's market stall in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. (Roseline Amondi is featured in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.)  Roseline buys fish wholesale then fries them up on the street in front of her makeshift home and sells the lot of them before nightfall. She is the recipient of a small micro-loan which has given her the ability to open a small cafe, but the biggest boost to her life has been the women who have become her loan partners. The micro-lending operates as a club. If one person defaults, then everyone is responsible. The group is tight-knit, and gets together to talk about work, but also to play sports and support each other emotionally.  MODEL RELEASED.

  • Surrounded by his robot toys and sculptures, Clayton Bailey of Port Costa, California, is living proof that not everyone feels threatened by the prospect of being surrounded by mechanical human beings. In the studio behind his home, Bailey stands among the large robots he has sculpted since retiring as a professor of art from California State University, Hayward.   • Mackenzie Wolfson with her prescribed day's worth of food in the cafeteria at Camp Shane weight loss cam in the Catskill Mountains, New York. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The caloric value of her typical day's worth of food in July was 1,700 kcals. She is 15 years of age; 5 feet, 9 inches tall; and 299 pounds. Dating back to 1968, Camp Shane is the oldest weight-loss camp in the country and is a heavy investment for parents. There are about 500 male and female campers housed in small cabins on shaded hillsides overlooking athletic fields, a small lake, and the camp's most important building, the cafeteria. ?The food here is not bad. It's not what I would order in a restaurant,? says 15-year-old Mackenzie. ?You know, its been prepared low-fat, low-sodium, but when you eat it you're like, whoa, this isn't that bad. And it's really good for me? But before everyone goes, they pig out the week before. One summer I probably gained about five pounds the week before I went to camp.? MODEL RELEASED.
