"I enjoy it because I have lots of friends here," she says, "and my son and his wife also use this place." Mie lives with her second son and his family but comes to the center two or three times a week for a traditional Okinawan lunch, physical therapy, and companionship.

There would be leftovers, but not for long, Rick says, as he would eat all of them. The early days of space travel were dominated by Tang, Space Food Sticks, and a variety of pastes squeezed from aluminum tubes—all designed to prevent the levitation of liquids and crumbs, which can be hazardous to the equipment. Over the years, space menus have become more palatable, and now astronauts can even enjoy fresh fruits for the first few days of a mission. The challenges of weightlessness extend to photography. Even with three fellow astronauts helping to wrangle Leland’s floating food as shuttle commander Charles Hobaugh took the photo, all of the items in Leland’s daily fare aren’t clearly visible. Fictional Representation and Caption: The Smith's of Vallejo, California were not certain that the latest hi-tech form of giving their (unborn) child a headstart was effective, but it sure was fun to see Junior react to their voice on his "fetalfone". It was true that the youngster could only use it to listen (even if he could talk, it would very difficult in the amniotic fluid), but they enjoyed the idea that their offspring would be comfortable with a cell phone from Day Minus-90 to Day One when he popped out. The flat screen imaging unit affords the parents (and in this case older sister) the opportunity to track the unborn's development and also watch his reactions when they talk to him on the "Fetalfone". The caloric value of his day's worth of food on a typical day in December was 2500 kcals. He is 51 years of age; 5 feet, 4 inches tall; and 110 pounds. Behind him is a pile of last year's rice straw, used for fuel to boil water in the family's small kitchen. Rainwater from the tile roof of the main house fills a cement cistern, providing water for drinking and cooking. Theo enjoys the relative tranquility of village life, compared to his wife's busy routine of selling fresh produce on the sidewalks of Hanoi. Floods ruined his rice crop a few months ago, so after last year's store of rice is eaten, the family will rely on his wife's income to buy this staple grain until he harvests the next crop. Her weight has yo-yoed over the years and at the time of the picture she was near her heaviest; walking her children to school every day was the sole reason she didn't weigh more. The son of a Soviet-era collective farm leader, he was raised near the Black Sea and originally worked as an artist and engineer. Over the years, he's learned a few dozen crafts, which eventually enabled him to restore a vast number of objects, build his own house, and be his own boss. His travel adventures have included crossing the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, where he spent time with a blind hermit and dined with a Mongol woman who hunted bears and treated him to groundhog soup. His favorite drink: Cognac. Does he ever drink soda? ?No, I use cola in restoration to remove rust, not to drink,? he says.

She has a thirst for alternative medicine and homeopathic healing, as well as a deep interest in how her diet affects her body. She has practiced Shivambu (sometimes spelled Sivambu), which is the drinking of one's own first morning urine (200 cc in her practice) as a curative and preventative measure, for over 15 years. Millie applies urine to her skin as well, for the same reasons.
