Rick's new lifestyle rules out one of his favorite restaurant dinners with his wife, Connie, and son, Greg: three extra-large pizzas, crazy bread, and no vegetables. There would be leftovers, but not for long, Rick says, as he would eat all of them. A self-taught gospel singer, guitar player, and lay preacher, Rick used to enjoy preaching and playing on Wednesday evenings at Copper Ridge Independent Missionary Baptist Church before he became too heavy to stand for long periods.   • Proton decay experiment to determine the ultimate stability of matter..View of the entrance of Tokyo University's Proton Decay Experiment. 1,000 50-centimeter photomultiplier tubes line the 12-meter deep tank of water form the experiment. The water contains enough protons to provide an average of one decay event per year, an event that may be detected by these tubes as the particles from the decay cause a visible light phenomenon known as Cerenkov radiation. The experiment is taking place 914 meters underground in a zinc mine below Mt. Ikenoyama to minimize the effects of cosmic rays. Japan. (1985).

  • RADON CURE: Defunct gold and uranium mines south of Helena, Montana, attract ailing tourists, who bask in radioactive radon gas and drink radioactive water to improve their health. Each summer, hundreds of people, come to the radon health mines to relax and treat arthritis, lupus, asthma and other chronic cripplers. Visitor Ralph Clark at the Merry Widow Mine, which is a tunnel into the mountain, with a temperature that remains around 60 degrees in both winter and summer. The typical vacation at the Merry Widow Health Mine lasts anywhere from a week to two weeks and visitors are recommended to sit in the mine two or three times a day. Visitors also soak their feet in the freezing cold mineral waters or drink the mine water, which they claim is very productive to good health. The water at the Merry Widow Mine has been tested by the State Health Department and found to be pure for drinking purposes. The mineshaft touts radon levels as much as 175 times the federal safety standard for houses. The permitted total visit is determined by the radiation level of the particular mine. The average visitor is 72 years old. The mines appeal to "plain people," such as the Amish or the Mennonites, because of the "natural" healing aspects, the lack of commercialization, and the relatively low cost-per-hour for treatment sessions.   • (1992) At the Home Office of the Forensic Science Service in Aldermaston, England, John Bark and Linda Nelson discuss the results of a DNA profile of blood and semen samples taken from a pair of pants. The blood will be removed, and then analyzed using DNA fingerprinting techniques. This will enable the scientist to determine whether the blood belonged to the victim or the assailant. Hanging up in the foreground are various DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) autoradiograms from other DNA fingerprinting studies. DNA consists of two sugar- phosphate backbones, arranged in a double helix, linked by nucleotide bases. There are 4 types of base; adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). Data is entered into a computer and eventually they hope to match data to make an ID.  They hope to extract DNA from bones for DNA fingerprinting. Skeleton in a forensic laboratory. The bones have been numbered for identification. The researchers are trying to determine the identity of the body, which can be done by extracting and studying DNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the chemical responsible for heredity, and is different in each individual. These are the remains of someone abducted and murdered during the military rule in Argentina between 1976 and 1983. The hole in the skull is testament to a violent death.  Buenos Aires, Argentina.   • Pilgrims take their turn to bathe in the Shipra River during the Kumbh Mela festival, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) The Kumbh Mela festival is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage held 4 times every 12 years, cycling between the cities of Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar.  Participants of the Mela gather to cleanse themselves spiritually by bathing in the waters of India's sacred rivers.  Hindus believe that the rivers in the Indian cities of Allahabad, Haridwar, Nasik, and Ujjain are sacred, and that bathing in those rivers during the religious festival Kumbh Mela will release them from past sins and mistakes and liberate them from the cycle of birth and death. Auspicious bathing days are determined by the position of the sun and the moon, and on these days more than a million pilgrims might descend for a dip. In Ujjain, thousands of police control the crowds at the Shipra River with whistles, poles, and batons to prevent stampedes and drownings, and bathing time is kept to 12 minutes per group. Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious festivals on earth, attracting millions from all over India and the world.  Past Melas have attracted up to 70 million visitors. The festival attracts more pilgrims than any other religious gathering on the planet, including Islam's Hajj.

The IMB Project is named after the sponsoring institutions, University of California at Irvine, University of Michigan and the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The experiment consists of a 60-foot deep tank filled with 8,000 tons of purified water, dug into the Morton-Thiokol salt mine at Painesville, Ohio, some 2,000 feet underground. The proton decay event will be detected by an array of 2,048 photomultipliers that line the tank. Proton decay is essential in most Grand Unified Theories of the fundamental forces, but to date no firm evidence of the decay has been found.

If a proton decays, the charged particles it generates move through the water faster than light, and so generate blue 'Cerenkov' radiation. It is this that the photomultipliers detect.   • Even someone who believes that in the future most humans will become the slaves of all-powerful machines has to have a laugh sometimes. Why not have it with toy machines? Taking a moment off from his work at the cybernetics department at the University of Reading in the UK, Kevin Warwick (on left), author of March of the Machines: Why the New Race of Robots Will Rule the World, plays with Lego Mindstorm robots that his students have programmed to box with each other. The toys are wildly popular with engineers and computer scientists because they can be programmed to perform an amazing variety of tasks. In this game, sensors on the toys determine which machine has been hit the most. In his more serious work, Warwick is now trying to record his neural signals on a computer and replay them into his nervous system.   • Proton decay experiment to determine the ultimate stability of matter. Dr. Masatoshi Koshiba, director of Tokyo University's Proton Decay Experiment. Dr. Koshiba is seen holding one of the 1,000 50 centimeter photomultiplier tubes that line the 12-meter deep tank of water that forms the experiment. The water contains enough protons to provide an average of one decay event per year, an event that may be detected by these tubes as the particles from the decay cause a visible light phenomenon known as Cerenkov radiation.
