The son of a baker, Zareh began working full-time at age 10 and regrets that he didn't attend school and learn how to read and write. By working 10 hours a day, every day of the week, he has sent his four children to school so they don't have to toil as hard as he does. The product of his daily labor is something to savor. His fresh, hot loaves are as mouthwatering and tasty as any in the world. After baking in the tandoor clay ovens, most of the rounds of fresh bread are dried and broken into bits.

When the SALT Treaty called for the de-activation of the 18 Titan missile silos that ring Tucson, volunteers at the Pima Air Museum asked if one could be retained for public tours. After much negotiation, including additional talks with SALT officials, the Green Valley complex of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing was opened to the public. Deep in the ground, behind a couple of 6,000 pound blast doors is the silo itself. The 110 foot tall missile weighed 170 tons when it was fueled and ready to fly.

Sumos cook and eat chanko nabe, a stew pot of vegetable and meat or fish, at nearly every meal. It  is eaten with copious amounts of rice and numerous side dishes. Miyabiyama eats now to maintain his weight rather than to gain it, unlike the younger less gargantuan wrestlers in his stable who are eating a lot to pack on weight.

  • The Imam of Kouakourou village on the banks of the Niger River in Mali,  teaches a Koranic lesson to students. Several of Soumana Natomo's children attend these classes, along with classes at what they call, "the modern school" taught in French where they learn math and reading. The Natomo family lives in two mud brick houses in the village of Kouakourou, Mali, on the banks of the Niger River. They are grain traders and own a mango orchard. According to tradition Soumana is allowed to take up to four wives; he has two. Wives Pama and Fatoumata are partners in the family and care for their many children together. Material World Project.

  • (MODEL RELEASED IMAGE). After a five-hour sled ride from Cap Hope, the Madsens arrive at their destination, a frozen lake below a glacier. They spent most of the night ice fishing (at the end of May the sun does not set this far above the Arctic Circle)  for artic char. The next afternoon, after another 6 hours of fishing everyone gets to enjoy Emil's dinner: steamed arctic char with curry and rice in the canvas tent. The crowd pushes forward to circle the burning man and begin a full night of revelry and dancing and more. Burning Man is a performance art festival known for art, drugs and sex. It takes place annually in the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nevada, USA.

Grocery stores, supermarkets, and megamarkets all have their roots in village market areas where farmers and vendors would converge once or twice a week to sell their produce and goods. In farming communities, just about everyone had something to trade or sell. As transportation became more efficient (especially refrigerated transport), and farms became huge, big corporations moved into the food business to take advantage of scale, especially in the United States. Now the convenience of one-stop shopping has made this business even bigger. Even the smaller supermarkets are being bought up or run out of business by the larger concerns. Some small town markets still exist today throughout much of Europe, although to a lesser degree there as well. Small markets are still the lifeblood of communities in the developing world, and, for better or worse, will remain so until they are numerous and big enough to attract the conglomerates' attention. Coming full circle, farmers markets have come back into vogue in some places in the USA where they had largely disappeared.

The Bodies arrive day and night from far and near to be cremated at Jalasi Ghat, the cremation grounds at Manikarnika Ghat. One hundred or more times a day male family members carry a loved one’s body through the narrow streets on a bamboo litter to the Ganges River shore—a place of pilgrimage for Hindus during life, and at death. Not every Hindu can be cremated here, because of transportation costs and logistical considerations. Sometimes a body is burned in one location and the ashes brought to Varanasi. There are other rivers in India, such as the Shipra which flows through the sacred city of Ujjain, that are considered sacred as well, but none holds the importance of the Ganges. Sometimes a small dummy representing the person will be burned at Jalasi.<br />
Only male family members are present and tend to the bodies at the cremation site as no show of emotion is allowed and also, they don’t want any of them jumping onto the fire, says one manager at the ghat. The body is carried to the water’s edge for a last dip, and then the main mourner prepares for his role in the ritual burning.<br />
The main mourner—usually the eldest son or closest male family member’s hair and facial hair is shorn, and his nails are cut. He wears a simple dhoti (traditional Indian male’s wraparound clothing). The chief mourner follows a prescribed ritual, which involves circling the body and showering it with ghee (clarified butter) and incense—like sandalwood—again often purchased from one of the local funereal accessories vendors. It takes about three hours for an average sized body to burn completely. If a family is poor and doesn’t have enough money to buy the right amount of wood to burn the body, then wood left over from other fires might be used. It takes about 350 kilos of wood to burn a body completely.<br />
