The event began in Darwin, Northern Territories on November 1st, 1987 and finished in Adelaide, South Australia. MacCready is photographed next to the unfolded array of some 7,200 photovoltaic cells that comprise the vehicle's power supply.   • On Green Island, a former prison island off the coast of SE Taiwan where political prisoners were incarcerated and re-educated during the unnervingly recent White Terror. There's actually still a high-security prison on the island, but it only holds 200 inmates (actual felons, not polital prisoners), as opposed to the couple thousand of earlier decades..Now it's mostly a tourist destination. We visited in the off season in March, thereby avoiding the 5,000-10,000 tourists that inundate the little place daily, though, being the off season, we had to contend instead with intermittent cold rain and high winds.

The caloric value of her typical day's worth of food in June was 2600 kcals. She is 20 years of age; 5 feet, 5 inches tall and 106 pounds.  Chen Zhen eats at KFC 3 times a week and what she eats depends on the coupons that she and her friends gather to defray the cost of the meal. The rest of her meals in the course of a week are largely Chinese and traditional. She eats simple fare at her university campus cafeteria--soups with rice and vegetables. Flow cytometry characterizes single cells as they pass at high speed through a laser beam. Speeds of up to 50,000 cells a second can be measured. The scattering of the laser beam provides a way to identify the cells. Many other characteristics, such as shape and surface texture can also be measured. The baby is receiving gene therapy for its condition. It is isolated in a sterile tent to prevent infection. The rare genetic mutation of SCID destroys the immune system making the body unable to fight infection. SCID babies lack a vital enzyme, which their immune system needs. Gene therapy involves inserting a gene for this enzyme into stem bone marrow cells and transplanting the cells into the baby. The device at right is a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. The rare genetic mutation of SCID, found in both mice and humans, destroys the immune system and the body is unable to fight infection. Dr Mosier managed to implant disease-fighting human white blood cells into SCID mice giving them a permanent human immune system.   • Marvin Minsky (born 1927), pioneering US computer and artificial intelligence scientist. Minsky studied at Harvard University before embarking on a distinguished career in artificial intelligence and robotics. In 1951 he designed and built with another colleague the first neural network-learning machine, modeled on human brain cells. He later founded the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and in 1985 co-founded MIT's Media Lab, where he now works as Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences.   • This is the "iodine cell," a device developed and perfected by Butler, Marcy, and instrument specialist Steven Vogt of the University of California, Santa Cruz. When light from a star passes through the iodine, molecules in the hot vapor absorb parts of the light at very specific energies. Then, a specially etched slab of glass spreads the starlight into a glorious rainbow spectrum?like a prism held up to the sun, but with exquisitely fine detail. Because the iodine has subtracted bits of the light, a forest of dark black lines covers the spectrum like a long supermarket bar code. "It's like holding the star up to a piece of graph paper," McCarthy says. "The iodine lines never move. Fictional Representation and Caption: The Smith's of Vallejo, California were not certain that the latest hi-tech form of giving their (unborn) child a headstart was effective, but it sure was fun to see Junior react to their voice on his "fetalfone". It was true that the youngster could only use it to listen (even if he could talk, it would very difficult in the amniotic fluid), but they enjoyed the idea that their offspring would be comfortable with a cell phone from Day Minus-90 to Day One when he popped out. The flat screen imaging unit affords the parents (and in this case older sister) the opportunity to track the unborn's development and also watch his reactions when they talk to him on the "Fetalfone".   • Genetically engineered tomato plants. Geneticist Dr. Virginia Ursin examines cultures of Flavr Savr tomato plants; the first genetically engineered whole food. Each dish contains seedlings cultured from a single cell, grown on agarose medium. Flavr Savr tomatoes have a gene that allows the fruit to ripen on the vine without softening; so they are tastier, don't need ripening with ethylene gas, and are not damaged during shipping. Tomato softening occurs due to the enzyme polygalacturonase. Flavr Savr tomatoes contain an anti-sense gene that blocks the enzyme.   • An American documentary about a Los Angeles SWAT police team show being watched by Soumana Natomo and other men and boys in the village of Kouakourou on the banks of the Niger River in Mali. There is no electricity in the village. The television is powered by a car battery that is charged by a photovoltaic solar cell on the roof of the pharmacy behind the men.   • Sara Akbar, development specialist for the Kuwait Oil Company, makes a cell phone call before joining firefighters from the companies (KWWK: Kuwait Wild Well Killers) as they prepare to extinguish the first oil well fire in Iraq's Rumaila Oil field. After dousing the flames with high pressure water hoses, they sealed the spurting well of gas and oil with drilling mud using what is called a "stinger," a tapered pipe on the end of a long steel boom controlled by a bulldozer. Drilling mud, under high pressure, is pumped through the stinger into the well, stopping the flow of oil and gas. The Rumaila oil field is one of Iraq's biggest with five billion barrels in reserve. The burning wells in the Rumaila Field were ignited by retreating Iraqi troops when the US and UK invasion began in March 2003. Rumaila is also spelled Rumeilah.

The term genome describes the full set of genes expressed by an organism's chromosomes. A gene is a section of DNA that instructs a cell to make a specific protein. The task of constructing such a complete blueprint of genetic information for humans is divided into two main phases: mapping genes and other markers on chromosomes, and decoding the DNA sequences of genes on all the chromosomes. Numerous laboratories worldwide are engaged on various aspects of genome research.
