  • Virtual reality: fitting adjustments being made to a data suit (blue, center) by Lou Ellen Jones, Asif Emon and Bea Holster at VPL research, Redwood City, California. VPL specializes in virtual or artificial reality systems, the production of computer-generated graphical environments that users may enter. Visual contact with such artificial worlds is provided by a headset equipped with 3-D goggles. A spatial sensor on the headset (to fix the user's position in space) and numerous optical fiber sensors woven into the data suit, relay data back to the computer. The forerunner to the data suit is the data glove, which restricted the user's virtual interaction to hand gestures. Model Released (1990)

  • Ermelinda Ayme wraps her baby in two shawls tied in different directions as she cultivates potatoes with her husband Orlando in their village of Tingo, central Andes, Ecuador. (From the book Hungry Planet; What the World Eats  (p. 117) Ermelinda Ayme is also one of the 80 people featured with one day's food in the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) When she and her husband Orlando arrived at the field, a ten-minute walk from their home, they said a quick prayer to Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) before working the land. Occasionally, Ermelinda has to adjust the baby's position, but generally she has no problem carrying her tiny passenger. The Ayme family of Tingo, Ecuador, a village in the central Andes, is one of the thirty families featured, with a weeks' worth of food, in the book Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. The family consists of Ermelinda Ayme Sichigalo, 37, Orlando Ayme, 35, and their children: Livia, 15, Moises, 11, Jessica, 10, Natalie, 8, Alvarito, 4, Mauricio, 30 months, and Orlando hijo (Junior), 9 months. Lucia, 5, lives with her grandparents to help them out.   • Researchers adjust the mechanism of WE-3RIII, Waseda University's head robot, after it accidentally whiplashed into its own wires. In a situation all too familiar to robotics researchers, Atsuo Takanishi ( hand on right) is trying to make his creation work. His research team's robot, WE-3RIII (Waseda Eye Number 3 Refined Version III) can follow a light with its digital-camera eyes, moving its head if needed. In the laboratory the robot worked perfectly, its movements almost disconcertingly lifelike. But while being installed at a robot exhibit in Tokyo, WE-3RIII inexplicably and violently threw back its head, tearing apart its own wiring. Now Takanishi and one of his students (hand on left) are puzzling over the problem and will solve it only in the early hours of the morning before the exhibit opened. Japan.   • Studying the creation of life. A scientist adjusts equipment during a re-run of the Miller-Urey experiment into the origin of life. A flask containing a mixture of water, hydrogen, methane and ammonia has an electric field applied across it. A ultra-violet laser is used to illuminate the mixture and to stimulate an electrical discharge in the mixture. This experiment, devised first by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey in 1952, produces a mixture of 'pre-biotic' chemicals such as amino acids.
