The sunrise ushers in another day of waiting. It's November, two months after the rainy season, but  temperatures are still low. Women sweep the dirt in front of their tents while children walk to the water depot with empty plastic containers as roosters crow and donkeys bray into the desert air, which is beginning to lose its nighttime chill.

  • Professor Fumio Hara and Assistant Professor Hiroshi Kobayashi's female face robot (second-generation) at Science University of Tokyo, Japan, has shape-memory electric actuators that move beneath the robot's silicon skin to change the face into different facial expressions much as muscles do in the human face. The actuators are very slow to return to their original state and remedying this is one of the research projects facing the Hara and Kobayashi Lab. The robot head is lit from within by a pencil light strobe cloaked in a yellow gel. It was photographed in the neon bill-boarded area of Shinjuku, a section of Tokyo, on a rainy evening at rush hour.   • A member of the Khuenkaew family busily plucking up female giant red ants, known as maeng man, which are flying away from their homes on brand new wings. The 'harvest' of the maeng man is a once-a-year event occurring just after the first rains of the rainy season which push the ants out of their old homes to form new ones.   • During chilly mornings and evenings in northern Namibia's rainy season, the women of Okapembambu village draw steaming buckets of milk from their cows, despite the distraction of ankle-deep mud and manure. (From the book What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets.) Milk and its by-products are the Himba's most important source of nutrition. The women add a bit of soured milk to the fresh liquid to hasten the process of natural fermentation, and they shake calabash gourds for hours to make butter. They drink some of the soured milk, use some to make their cornmeal porridge, and mix butterfat with ochre to make their body cream.
