It protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The Devils Postpile formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.   • The crumbling village of Gallipienzo, in Navarra, Spain is built on the side of a hill and is utterly charming. The houses are built of stone and mortar. The old mortar is crumbling and is patched in places. Several of the homes are newly renovated but the owners kept the original ideas of the houses in place which is what is keeping the village charming.

American forces chased and trapped retreating Iraqi forces north of Kuwait City on the night of February 25 and the day of February 26, 1991. These units withdrew via the Jahra road on the way to Basra, an escape route that has become known as the "highway to hell." They were attacked by coalition aircraft and it is estimated that several thousand retreating Iraqis died. .

Sunraycer (bottom left) is shown here on the 3rd day of the race, moving along a dead straight section of the Stuart Highway (Route 87) in the outback 100 km south of Devil's Marbles. Sunraycer was the eventual winner, taking 5 1/2 days to complete the 1,950 miles, traveling at an average speed of 41.6 miles per hour. Sunraycer's power source was an array of 7,200 photovoltaic cells, joined to form a hood over the top and back of the vehicle. (1987) .
