Visiting doctors watch surgeon Volkmar Falk perform a coronary artery bypass graft on a patient lying in the adjoining room, using a tele-manipulated surgical system (called a robotic system by some) designed by Intuitive Surgical Corporation of Mountainview, California, at the Herzzentrum, Leipzig, Germany.

  • New Age meditation technology. A client at the Altered States Float Center inside a Float Chamber. The Float Chamber contains a 25 cm deep pool of water containing Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) and heated to skin temperature. The client may either relax in total silence, have sounds channeled into the chamber through underwater speakers or may view 'self-improvement' videotapes. It is claimed that within a few minutes inside the chamber, the client's left-brain relaxes into deep dream states, allowing meditation and relaxation.   • Virtual reality: Michael McGreevy, PhD. in front of a pair of video images of the Valles Marineris of the planet Mars, computer-generated from data provided by the Viking spacecraft at NASA's Ames Research Centre, California. Sophisticated computers & sensors provide the user with a telepresence in the virtual world, through small video screens mounted in goggles on a headset, whilst a spherical joystick controls movement through the virtual landscape. One future Martian application of this system might be in gathering geological samples by remote control using a rover robot.   • An unexploded rockeye submunition (cluster bomb), in the Manageesh Oil Field. After finding these rockeye submunitions all over Kuwait, the British Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team detonate them with plastic explosives from a safe distance. When they are found close to a burning oil well, a string is attached and it is dragged to a cooler distance to be detonated. Nearly a million land mines were deployed on the beaches and along the Saudi and Iraqi border. In addition, tens of thousands of unexploded bomblets (from cluster bombs dropped by Allied aircraft) littered the desert. July 1991. More than 700 wells were set ablaze by retreating Iraqi troops creating the largest man-made environmental disaster in history.

  • Studying the creation of life. A scientist adjusts equipment during a re-run of the Miller-Urey experiment into the origin of life. A flask containing a mixture of water, hydrogen, methane and ammonia has an electric field applied across it. A ultra-violet laser is used to illuminate the mixture and to stimulate an electrical discharge in the mixture. This experiment, devised first by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey in 1952, produces a mixture of 'pre-biotic' chemicals such as amino acids. This projects patterns of colored lights into the eyes, and plays the sound of ocean waves into the ears. It is claimed that this helps the wearer to achieve a meditative state, from, which they enjoy deep mental and physical relaxation. Further claims for long-term use of the system include increased creativity, improved memory and improvements in problem- solving and decision-making abilities. A session lasts for 45 minutes. Cyberspace racquetball game: real strokes made by Christopher Allis, the player are returned by the Cyberspace computer through the virtual, computer- generated environment displayed on the monitor. Admission to this virtual squash court is provided by 3-D video goggles, a magnetic sensor & optical fiber sensors woven into a black rubber glove. The headset sensor transmits data to the computer on the player's position in space, whilst the data glove connects real hand movements to the virtual racquet court. Plans for a proposed design are fed into a computer, which is capable of displaying them in sophisticated 3-D graphics. Thus the real building is presented by the computer as a virtual one. Visitors wearing special headsets fitted with video goggles and spatial sensors can move from room to room within the virtual space as if they were in the real world.   • SUPER SUPPER WITH I-GOGS"  Photo Illustration for the Future of Communication GEO (Germany) Special issue. Fictional Representation and Caption: Statistics and cultural studies always harked that families who dine "ensemble" have much better relations than those who do not. The time-honored tradition of families eating together fell by the wayside by the end of the 20th century. In the time-starved 21st century, families re-instituted the practice, but with a twist. They ritualistically eat together but are nearly all multi-tasking at the same time. But they can and often do interact with new half-mirrored goggles "I-GOGS" that allow virtually any computer/TV/school/ or video game program to be played at any time. Mealtime became an opportunity to share data as well as food. The Elkins family of Yountville, California are all surfing various audio-visual entertainment nodes while partaking of their Friday evening fish logs, sports drinks and Jello. MODEL RELEASED.

Black goggles on Rehnmark's head give him the view from the twin digital cameras mounted in the robot's shiny carapace. Next to Rehnmark, engineer Hal A. Aldridge tracks the robot's test results. In a cavernous adjacent room in the Johnson Space Center  in Texas is a life-sized mock-up of the robonaut's future home: the NASA space shuttle.   • Good-naturedly donning fishy swim goggles for the camera, Yuuzi Terada, an engineer at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, stands at company headquarters with a pair of the sleek robot fish he constructs. Gray's Paradox asks the question why fish, with their slim muscles and small fins, can accelerate so quickly. Researchers have long hoped that unraveling Gray's Paradox will allow them to build safer, faster nautical propulsion systems. The dream is shared by Terada and other researchers at Mitsubishi, who have long thought that fish fins might serve as a model for a new kind of propeller that would make underwater vehicles faster, more stable, and more maneuverable.
