  • Although prices are higher, some who can afford them prefer to shop in the supermarkets because foreign brands, local produce and meat products can be found in one location, under one roof. Supermarkets are generally a new phenomenon in Ecuador as the large outdoor markets have long been a way of life for Ecuadorians. Zumbagua is midway between the high Andes and the coastal lowlands; its market, supplied by both climatic zones, creates a kind of ecological collision, with purple mountain potatoes and bumpy red oca tubers vying for space with tropical pineapples and blocks of coarse brown sugar.
